How Do I Get A 1.9 To Idle...

Recommended Posts

zowow

Engine is in, and everything seems to work... except

1). The 'Engine Temp Sensor' thingy that measures the temperature of the coolant doesn't appear to exist on the 1.9 lump i have. I've taken the one of the 1.6 but have no where to mount the thing to.

2) It runs with this plugged in, except... it starts up, idles at 1k for about 5secs, then revs up to 4k before the revs drop and it cuts out. If i keep my foot on the accelerator i can keep it going.

Could it be because of a vacuum pipe maybe? if so where do they go?

and, is the engine temp thingy in a completely different place on the 1.9 lump?

Could it just be down to timing as well ?

Cheers :)

are you sure your loom is out of 1,6i ? Because as far as i know all injection models must have an 'engine coolant temp sensor' and connector on the loom.

p.s. the car would work without that sensor, but you need to rev it to reach operating temperatures. Also 1,9i have a SAD device which is used for cold starts, to keep some more air until car reaches operating temp.

what vacuum pipes you mean ?

yep, standard 1.6 phase one gti

1.9 lump....

would not start without the temp sensor

just not sure how to get it running ok really not sure where the vacuum pipes go. theres a little hole by the dizzy, and another on on the inlet manifold, do these connect together or something

the 1.9 definately didn't have one, but it will not start unless i connect up the 1.6 temp sensor :s

i'm pretty sure with that connected up, it should work if i can figure out where the vacuum pipes go and mess around with the timing.

guess i will have to find somewhere to mount the sensor as theres no room to mount it on the engine as the holes are different to the 1.6 and it fouls on the dizzy....

best bet is to try searching for pics and stuff. the only vacume pipes go to the vac advance and the brake servo. what years are the engines as the positioning for the temp sensor changed at some point.

My guess is no

theat could be the problem. A bit of PVC tape can cover that up successfully!
