Dodgy Fuelling After Engine Swap, 1.6 To 1.9

Recommended Posts

Got the engine in, wired in and plumbed in ok but it still will not run right..

First off i put in 1.9 injectors, 1.9 afm and 1.9 ecu

not firing up, loads of fuel going in

tried all combinations and thought my 'longman' engine may have bigger injectors, so took them out and swapped them for the 1.6 ones, 1.6 afm and 1.6 ecu, it fired up, idled at 3k rpm then died.

so i cranked it over without the injectors connected and it fired up for 5secs (so massive overfuelling been going on)

not really sure what to do now after 5hrs of head scratching... any ideas of anything else you would try? :)

thanks :D

Old favourite-- ecu temp sensor (blue plug under dizzy, behind stat cover on most cars) check wiring to it is soundly connected and that the blue plug is connected to it, not the black SAD plug If it's no better fit the one from old engine. As soon as this is sorted change the oil and filter - really right away, no excuses!!!

all this because of a temp sensor? so thats why its idling at 3500 and flooding the engine?

so you think i should retry with that connected, using the 1.9 ecu, 1.9 injectors and 1.9 afm?!

cheers :)

yup because the ECU thinks the engine is FREEZING cold so bangs in way to much fuel therefore floods it.

ahh that makes sense then! so first job tomorrow is, 1.9 injectors, 1.9 ecu, 1.9 afm and the bloody engine temp sensor plug :)

Hopefully i'll be tearing up the streets after i get me wheels back on (and i ring up and tell the insurance i got a 1.9 stuffed in there lol)

just wonder how much difference i'll notice between 1.6 an 1.9

can i just say that the engine is freezing cold as its not started yet, its interesting that it went to 3000 rpm, that would sujest that if the throttle is closed that you have an air leak somewhere, check all your inlet and breather hoses. Also just confirm that the items you say are 1.9 afm ecu injectors ect are actually 1.9 items. were they bought of ebay?

Yep, still the 1.6 box - must remember to fill it up with oil! :) - thats why it should be fun lol

well the engine temp sensor wasn't connected at all so i'm guessing the injectors were constantly pumping through fuel..because there was no connection to the sensor at all?

the afm/ecu and injectors are deffo 1.9 ones, they were bought from a good fellow on here lol

managed the wiring and the water pipes.. Anyone know where the vacuum pipes go?

if i knackered the ecu by connecting the coil up wrong then surely it wouldnt pump fuel through at all, rather than overfuelling?

after each time i start it i have to disconnect the injectors and blow the fuel out/crank the engine with them disconnected...

Tried another tachy relay? Just for elimination purposes.

hmm, i havent, but im gonna have a play later, i'm really hoping its the temp sensor as i dont have a spare of anything else. just seems wierd whatever ecu/afm/injectors i use it floods the engine.

The coil is nothing to do with the ECU, Your talking billy basic Jetronic here, It's lucky to control the Fueling!!

The high tick over could be the throttle cable routed in the wrong place, common mistake and easy done, MAke sure the throttle closes OK

Had a very similar sounding problem on a Miami 1.9 a few years back at a pug dealer i used to work for, just chucked loads of fuel in no matter what we tried, we hunted for ages until we found it was a faulty tachy relay, forget why but it cured it. :P
