Front Shocks And Springs With An Iron Block 2.0ltr Engine

Recommended Posts

mos

hi,

right after much research on here i have decided to go with either the bilstein sprintline kit with skip brown springs or bite the bullet and go with the full sbc phase 1 kit

i also intend to either run a 309gti rear beam with a 23mm or 24mm arb and possibly uprated torsion bars as well. if not going down the 309 route i am going to plum for the sbc phase 2 kit arb and torsion bars for my 205 rear beam.

sorted i thought, until i began to give it some more thought!

i am running an iron block s16 engine on bodies which obviously weights more than the alloy 16v engine which again weighs more than the original 8v engine.

the sbc front shocks and springs were obviously designed with the 8v engine in mind, so should i be looking for a stiffer spring and damper rating on the front than the sbc kit, or is the extra weight of the iron block engine not really that bigger issue relatively speaking and the sbc stuff will be fine?

what do you think?

worrying about nothing or is a rethink needed?!

thanks

mark

Over-worrying IMO, although i used to think/worry the same.

Should be fine either choice would be up to the job. The extra weight is negligible really.

I have the sprintline kit on mine and it is fine.

I suppose a really keyed in racing driver may comment, but for me its just the way the car is. I think Dino commented last year how smooth it was.

If you are really worried you could move the battery into the boot for piece of mind, I know I wouldn't notice though!

Might be worth seeing what the free length of the 306 springs is as the strut's are basically the same, You do need extra as I know when I had my 2.0l in mine the front droped down more than std

Mine sits a tad too low on the front with the iron block in, thats with koni yellows and Pi springs at the moment. I think its the springs on mine are too short though.

OE shocks should be fine with some tougher springs.

Anyone tried Neat Autos for shocks? They've got front and rear dampers for just under £30 each.

I know a lot of their stock is OE stuff.

now i am a little confused (easy to do i know! :P )

the 306 gti s16 etc weigh in at around the 1200kg to 1250 kg mark and a 205 with an s16 engine in is from info i have picked up on here about 30-40kg heavy than a standard 1.9 putting it somewhere in the 900-950kg range, about 300kg less than a 306gti

if i were to use 306 springs would these prove to be too stiff as they have a lot of extra weight to support?

or is it a case that most of the weight is towards the back of the car, hence the front shocks/springs on the 306 only have to cope with the extra weight of the engine mainly (approx 30-40kg) with a little extra weight from the rest of the car being found at the front.

what i am getting at is will although 205 springs are not stiff enough are 306 miles out the other way, being way to stiff.

i believe from searching on here the standard pug spring rating may be as low as 60-70lbs but i have no idea what the sbc roadspeed spring rating is or even how this compares to the 306 s16/gti6.

can anyone advise what these are of even what increase in spring rating i should be making to allow for the the extra 30-40kgs weight of the s16 engine

thanks

S16 = 1160kgs. GTI6 = 1214kgs.
