pugbliss 0 Posted June 7, 2007 ok for the past 6 months ive had a new exhuast on (down pipe) and all has been ok but recently its (its been progressive) sounded like what i can only decribe what an old bettle sounds like with the phut phuting and pap paping sound that they make..... ok to me this isnt normal but it does it more prominantly when car is cold but goes away (not so loud) when the car has been on a long motorway ride like when i go to work. the car has just been serviced and is du to go have its cam belt done soon too. but what else can i check???? could the internals have broke down inside the silencer part or could it have a hole in it so soon??? Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted June 7, 2007 you should be able to feel for any blows along the exhaust with your hand, if its been doing it a while it may be visible anyway in the form of soot collecting. I doubt it would be the baffles blowing out as they tend to just make the car noisier all round. Whats it like on power? to get a beetle sound you generally need to drop to 3 pots. If it sounds like a beetle, stick a loud back box on and a dump valve imitator from ebay and it'll sound like a scooby instead

Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted June 7, 2007 Could one of the exhaust manifold gaskets be giving way?
pugbliss 0 Posted June 8, 2007 possible????? but im sure its the joints between the front pipes and the rear box....even though there is no blowing i can totally hear it more in that area.
tom_m 0 Posted June 8, 2007 that exactly how i'd have described the noise mine made when one of the exhaust manifold to head gaskets disintegrated.
pugbliss 0 Posted June 8, 2007 and what is the way to check this????
CaptainP 2 Posted June 8, 2007 Use a piece of tissue and rev the engine. If it moves the tissue it should determine if it's leaking exhaust fumes or not.
