Lightweight Bonnets And Tailgates, For Track/race 205's

Recommended Posts

pdd144c

We at Xsport will soon be making 205 bonnets and tailgates in a number of composite materials, either as skins, or with internals. If they sell in good numbers we will look into producing doors, wings etc. All panels will be available in fibreglass, kevlar, carbon/kevlar and clear gel carbon!

Before this can happen I need to make the moulds. I need a very good OE bonnet and tailgate for this. If anyone has either of these panels that they can make available for this use, I will be able to give you a very good price on the finished product. Please PM me for details, or if my inbox is full please email me at pd@xsportracing.com

Prices will range from just over £100 for fibreglass items, up to around £450 for clear gel carbon.

Cheers

Paul.

Will they be std, Auto type or both bonnets Paul?

Will probably be standard to start with Baz, if there is enough interest I will look into producing some auto items.

I will have a bonnet available soon (not automatic). Its in good nick apart from the usual stone chips, does this matter?

Needs to be mint really... Although if necessary I can paint them before moulding commences.

For reference our latest clear gel carbon panels are for the new MX5. A couple of pics:

Why would you want to make standard shape bonnets, when most competetion XU 205s are running TBs or carbs. I'd recommend looking into more appropriate designs. I wish my current carbon bonnet had more clearance for my TBs.

We have more requests for standard style bonnets Sean. Most TBs and carb setups tend to fit fine under these, although it does depend on your inlet manifold design, more so than the length of trumpets. A number of race championships will only allow panels that retain the standard silhouette. It is always possible to modify a finished bonnet to suit if required for track day use, so if anyone has any suggestions we are willing to listen.

All our panels are finished in a gel coat Pete, normally in white or black, so none of the weave can be seen. The clear gel just allows the composite to be seen.

PM sent Ashley.

Can you make tailgates so they retain the original hinges or will they have to be bonnet pins?

I'll be buying a FG bonnet and boot soon, how will yours differ from those supplied by Shenpar? Are they better/stronger?

Tailgates can be either as a skin, which will need pins, or with internals which will bolt to the original hinges.

I can't comment on the Shenpar items as I have never seen them, but the majority of 205 panels I've seen flap around a lot. Ours won't do that, and they will fit better too. For the slight increase in price I'd go for a kevlar item, they are both stronger and lighter than the fibreglass items.

Thanks, I'll hold fire until you confirm prices then.

You say your carbon ones will be in a clear gel finsh, I take it they are wet lay up items then?

Do you use honeycomb in the construction?

Put me down for a boot then with the original mounting points. :)

Not sure which material as it depends on price.

I'll be interested to see the Kevlar bonnets/tailgates as most FG items I have seen just flap around. Being a track car mine doesn't have to be pritty but I do want it to stay in place without having to use the metal internals out of an existing bonnet.

Cant wait to see the end results.

They are wet lay up items Nathan, and we don't generally use honeycomb apart from floor pans etc.

Once I have the panels for moulding and the first set of composite panels are finished, I will have final prices for everything.

Cheers mate. Don't think the bonnet will be any good, paint needs to be mint or it will affect the mould. If worse comes to worse I could paint it though... Look forward to the pics!

Fibreglass tailgate's are already available, there is at least one car that runs @ Harewood with one which has standard hinge fittings & a glass heated rear window.

I'll find out who makes them & how much they are.

Graham.

Shenpar make them and Spoox do some - at wallet busting high prices!

How much weight will be saved with each item? ie FG/carbon/kevlar, tailgate/bonnet, with/without internals

I will know once the first panels have been produced. Currently waiting for some pics from Ashley and then hopefully the moulding process can begin.

Paul.
