IanG Dorset 0 Posted June 5, 2007 I have a small area just bellow the rear window on the drivers side where the lacquer has started to peel off. I asked the guy at the garage that i usualy go to what to do about it and he said to . . . sand it down carefuly with some wet n dry (the realy fine stuff - 1200 or some thing) to make smooth and the Tcut it. And then i was going to give the whole car a polish. Is this the correct way to go about it? And also what is the best way to prevent this from hapening againg? Is there any way! Do 205 come out of the factory with lacquer? Thanks for any advice given Ian
Paintguy 0 Posted June 6, 2007 All of the metallic and pearl (mica) colours were lacquered, as were some of the later red ones. Without seeing it, I'd take a guess that the panel in question has bee resprayed at some point, and hasn't been keyed (sanded) enough, causing the lacquer to flake. The method mentioned will work to a point, and will disguise the flaking edge. Unfortunately, if my assumption is correct, you can expect it to happen again in the future I'm afraid
sherly 0 Posted June 6, 2007 All you'll do by sanding is remove the lacquer layer, which really then needs to be recoated. Not sure how easy this would be on a small area. Unfortunatley once it starts peeling it usually spreads pretty quick. The lacquer on my roof started to craze and go white in one small patch about 12 months ago. It now covers most of the roof I guess its a combination of the s*ite paint used on later cars and lack of cleaning & polishing (by previous owners I should add )
