Idle Adjusted On 205 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I am potentially going to view a car some 80 miles away.......before I go, I would like some advice.

The guy selling says he had to adjust the idle to just over 1000 rpm to stop the idle hunting, is this something I should worry about/put me off buying the car, or is it normal for 205's?

He also says he has to put foot on throttle for 1st 5 seconds when started from cold in order to stop it stalling.

Thanks

Michael

Sounds like it needs a little tune and a potential problem with the SAD (cold start device) do a search its a common problem. Not too much to worry about.

He may have set the idle high to cover up low oil pressure?

How can I tell if the car has low oil pressure? Sorry, I am not that technical.

I am supposed to be going to see the car tomorrow. He says the idle sits pretty much dead on 1000 and it never hunts.

Thinking about it my last 205 used to idle higher than a 1000 but I never thought anything of it, I had that for 18 months before I mistakenly sold it to move onto a newer car......but no newer car can compete with the 205 IMO, living legend.

The hot oil pressure can drop very low at idle, but its normal IMO.

I would'nt be concerned at all by idle problems.

The bit about him using throttle to get it to run for the first 5 seconds is also normal in my opinion

^ would agree with James_m

they're old and, whilst you could spend some money sorting out the idle problems, it's not too much of a hardship having to drive around them

if you do a search, you should fine photographs of oil pressure gauges showing what you should be looking for from cruising/warm idle readings
