Cutting Engine Mounts

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

I need to trim my xu10 engine mount, the mount I have was from an aircon car so has lots of extra material on it, some of which is in the way of the throttle bodies, The part I need to cut off is just where it extends forwards to the aircon pump fixings, would cutting this off with a grinder create any weak spots prone to cracking?

Also the actual mount arm which goes over to the chassis has what looks like a lower mount attached to it (just the inner mount part) if that makes any sense, I would like to also trim this off while Im at it if its safe, I should be able to trim it down to the same shape as a standard xu10 mount arm.

I did this to mine mate, as you say just the forks that prong forward.

Its been fine for six months so far. Cant seeing it being a week spot TBH.

Your mount arm sounds like what you would find on a 406 turbo etc, so can you not use an S16 mount arm?

Have seen pictures of one cut off though, back on an old 2ltr turbo thread, dont know how safe that was, or

if it was ever run like that though.

the engine did come from a 406 so it will be the mount your thinking of, I just sold my old xu10j2 with the correct mount on as well :) , I'll chop it for now, car wont be seeing tarmac for a while yet so at least I can mount it and maybe find the correct one before it does go street legal.

thanks sam :)

No worries Richie. Aye, my original engine block mount went in the bin too :):)

Had it swinging on the Xu9 mount, but it did not look safe without a bit of fabrication :)
