Jumping And Cutting Out....

Recommended Posts

matty_gti

Well ive just got back from collecting my new red 1.6 gti, and what a mission it was.

Basically its starts fine, but will suddenly drop from 1500 RPM to about 1100 RPM and then back up again, it does this cold or warm. however it only warms up when sat there, when driving it colls to the second line on the dial so i will change the thermostat tomorrow.

Now in straight lines its fine, however round corners (right hand) the revs will jump and jump each time getting lower untill cutting out. sometimes it will start right away, sometimes i have to wait a few minutes before it finally catches after holder the key for about 10 seconds.

I think it may be one or a few of the following:

1. Fuel pump

2. Injectors

3. Fuel filter

4. Air filter

5. somthing to do with, cap, arm, leads and dizzy

6. wiring

Any help would be great as its doing my nut!! :D

Ive had a long long search and found a only a few similar problems, it appers it could be ign amp, wiring, ign components, of somthing to do with the fuel system as im sure its somthing to do with that :D

Sounds like a loose wire / conector somewhere, but could be anything on the inlet like tps or afm conectors, to injector wireing or mabe even sumthing silly like a loose dizzy cap / dodgy ht lead.

no doubt it'l be one of those anoying things where it turns out to be the last bit you check!!!

Good luck thou

Dave

Sounds like an ignition amp problem. Try a known good one.

2 minute job to swap and eliminate that as a possibility.

well i just rememberd it has just had a recent servie, new leads, plugs cap and arm. I wiggled the ht lead on top of the coli (ph 1) nad the car cut out......i tried restarting and all i could smell was fuel!. I then played a little more arond the coil/ign amp area and a few minutes later i tried and it started. The coil does look a little worn rusty  , so i think i may swap the whole setup over from my other car. however after playing with it and it running what i thought was ok it cut suddenly and teh revs justy dropd, i rolled onto the kurb, waited about 30secs n then it was ok :D:(

P.s its got nice new battery connectors and cables! :)

I've had intermittant failure from an ignition amp. Swap it first as I spent absolutely ages finding thing.

Also pull the HT leads off and check them one at a time. I had the main lead to the coil get rusty, again it caused rather intermittant and similar symptoms.

I will check as soon as it stops pis*ing it down! :) . i pulled the lead from the coil to cap and noticed the ends were rather flakey and green which i thought was odd for such a nearlly new lead set??
