Anyone Reconditioned An Alternator?

Recommended Posts

Anyone reconditioned an alternator and are they hard to do? Is it possible to do by someone with no alternator reconditioning experience? Mine has done very low mileage since it was reconditioned (bought from gsf) and is suspect but out of warranty so am thinking of taking it apart myself..

I was told it's possible but a bit of a specialist job to replace a blown rectifier. This was from a local auto electrical specialist whom I asked about fixing my alternator that failed in the same way as yours. Would work out cheaper than a recon alternator though. Worth a look through the yellow pages for auto electricians in your area.

Brushes are easy to replace btw, but they give different symptoms (flickering headlights most noticeably).

Its easy enough to get out the brushes etc. The question then is where to get spare parts? Thats where i fell down.

Well I cant see how difficult it would be to replace a diode on the end of the alt, so thats what I'll be doing at the weekend. Unless I come across a pug in a scrappy to raid for bits..

£25 exchange at wilf J's for the alt. Nice one on the heads up there Matt.

Would anyone know what the diodes are rated at on the alternators so I can price one up from RS, or is that getting a little bit deep?

One the ones I've looked at the diodes haven't been visible, think they are normally buried deep inside somewhere...

The thing that you can see on the end of the alternator is probably the regulator module, which is integral with the brush assembly and easy to get at. I haven't tried dismantling any further than that.

Im going to take mine apart anyhoo to see whats there -I may get lucky and see a strand of wire bridging across the legs of a diode or something. Probly not, but you never know!
