Scary Steering Problem

Recommended Posts

jas-E

Hey guys,

My mate has a problem with his 1.6 Gti and explains it as follows.

Basically its a power steering 205 1.6 gti, and recently as i would brake my steering wheel would pop up and when i accelerated the steering wheel goes back in. Its doing an inward outward movement in line with the steering column!! and when accelerting the steering wheel becomes extremely hard to steer.

I searched the forum and havent come across anything like this.

All help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jas

Is the wheel actually bolted on to the column tight?

Subframe, steering rack, and steering column bolts all tight?

hey Anthony,

I have never had anything to do with the steering rack. Where is the best place to get access to the steering rack and steering column bolts? Is it from underneath the car or remove the trim from the driver footwell?

The subframe is fine, but will double check it.

thanks

I'd go with Anthony's first diagnosis. Your subframe bolts are either extremely loose or non-existant. Don't drive it anywhere until you've sorted it!!

There are 6 bolts, accessed from underneath the car: 2 each side at the rear of the subframe going into captive nuts in the front footwells, and 1 each side just inboard of the suspension strut.
