ah250 0 Posted May 29, 2007 (edited) Hi all... After a 15 mile motorway blat on the weekend my CTI developed a whine/rumble .... The noise started after an easy motorway run. OK, the rumble is definately something that is turning as you can here a grinding that increases/decreases according to road speed. I do not think that it is engine/box related as on dipping clutch and revving the engine etc the sound stays the same. I went out this morning and the sound came back after about 5 miles. You can 'lessen' the grating by accelerating or braking, so is mostly worse whilst 'easing off the gas' Your assistance or pointers would be appreciated. Pug_Power_Dave 0 Posted May 29, 2007 CV joint on the way out mabe? any knocking when you go round corners / sending vibrations up the steering wheel? Cheers Dave
ah250 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Hi Dave Well some steering vibration when the rumble starts, although you can also feel through the pedals???? No knocking on tight locks, although I have noticed at light 'clunk' when doing thinks like parking & taking up drive (assumed it was a worn bush). I'm wondering if its a wheel bearing collapsing as its warming up???, as on acceleration or braking it pretty much disappears....Maybe by braking you are effectively clamping the disc/hub assembly. holding it tight/true. Pug_Power_Dave 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Try jacking that corner of the car up and feel for any free play in the wheel both holding the top and bottom of the wheel and pushing back and forth and again with each hand on the sides of the wheel. if there is some slight play here sounds like the bearing, and might even grind if you spin the wheel, if its more a clunking then sounds like the CV, would prob both be fine to start up with, until they get heated up. No sure why it might do it more when your decellerating, mabe sumthing with rather than the drive shaft turning the wheel, the wheels turning the drive shaft....if you know what i mean. ah250 0 Posted May 29, 2007 When I say decelerating, i mean 'coasting'.....Which supposidly means that the whole drive assembly is not 'tightened' by brake/acceleration forces.... This is a really hard thing to describe, thanks for hangng in there! Had bearing failure before on a Golf, that gave no 'normal' signs, the brakes failed on left hand bends as the caliper came out of line with the disc!!!! Could it be drive shaft as i have no idea of the tell tail signs?
Pug_Power_Dave 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Damn that golf sounds well dodgy!! lol Inner CV joint on a drive shaft usually gives vibration when accelerting or decelerating if theres probs with it, and probs with outer CV usually the clicking or knocking at low speed turns on lock. So not really giveing the right signs for either of those as doing it when coasting! Tricky one as you say. would recomend trying the bearing check with the wheel jacked and then if that feels fine start working inwards! Cheers Dave
ah250 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Could be the gearbox or differential?
Pug_Power_Dave 0 Posted May 29, 2007 I dont know about the signs of a failing diff, only one i've ever broke was fine then when BANG Guess it could be bearings in the gearbox or sumthing, but would have thought the syncro would be the 1st thing to give out on one of them?? Loads of options lol Dave
Casanova 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Could be a bloody great branch stuck under the car rubbing? Had that before §
luggy 13 Posted May 29, 2007 CV joint on the way out mabe? any knocking when you go round corners / sending vibrations up the steering wheel? Cheers Dave Im having similar problems on my 1.9 when travelling on motorways just a slight judder feeding through the steering and noticeable when taking left turns a bit of knocking coming from the nearside. I know its not the wheel bearing because this was changed last August so hopefully its the outer CV joint.
Pug_Power_Dave 0 Posted May 29, 2007 Sounds alot like it Luggy, my off-side outer CV is on the way out again!! silly old cars eh lol Dave
