Fueling Problem

Recommended Posts

Guest martyn_mcg

Hi, my mates 1.6 gti will not start, the plugs spark and it turns over, at first apparently it would start but jump to really high rpm then cut out.

A local garage said it looks like its over fueling a lot, thats where there help ended...!!!

we have tried new coil, dizzy, starter motor and even and an ECU, SAD and AFM from another gti thats lying around that was definatly working.

However the cars loom does seem to have been played about with big time by a previous owner. still, it ran fine for the month that my friend has had it and it seems that just taking the AFM off has caused this problem (he is sure he did not disturb anything else), any ideas would be great because we are all out of them!!!

Regards, Martyn

is it actually getting fuel a well as firing, IE are the plugs getting wet?

If its been overfueling I start by taking the plugs out and either replacing them or cleaning them up, spin the engine over a few times while they are out to clear any residual fuel deposits.

Assumings its getting fuel and it is sparking then you need to be sure the spark plug leads are back in the correct order. If they are then the car should start so long as the battery is healthy and the starter is spinning the engine quick enough. Often bump starting the car will overcome initial starting gremlins.
