Help At The 'ring With Smoking Gti

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

my main problem is that after one lap of the ring this evening, oil smoke is pouring out from the car.

The oil presure and temp okay. oil has blown around all over and under engine bay but hard to track down. its definitely been cooking on the exhaust which seems to be source of smoke if not the actual oil leak. just before the smoking we gave it an oil top up cos there had been a lot of clattering from rocker cover area the whole way here. thought extra oil might help up to full mark. dipstick seal is chewed up and the tube is basically open to the air.

help and advice would be great as wve got tools just no idea what to do cheers

Oil will come out of the dipstick tube if it's not sealed.

it's a bit pikey, but if it's blowing from the dipstick tube you could attempt to seal it using duct tape - wrap it round the stick and the handle (don't want to lose it down the d'stick tube!). no idea if it'd be effective - just an idea

good luck with it anyway

ok we left it overnight and cleaned up the mess this morning also sealed up the dipstick. it started smoking after ten minutes ie as soon as the engine had warmed up. popped bonnet and its pretty clear its not dipstick hole.

rocker cover top bolts seem loose. could it be a bad rocker cover seal at the distributor end

help please

yes, you will need to whip the rocker cover off, clean up the faces and then secure it back on. Personally I always use a smear of sealant with the rocker cover gasket to ensure a good seal.

Check the breather pipes as well.

If it is really "blowing" oil out, this means it is not just a simple leak.

Sounds like crakcase pressure isn´t able to escape the way it should do.

Hey mate,

That happened to me over easter. The rocker cover bolt next to the dizzy cap loosened and all my oil pissed out from there. Luckily i was close to home when the oil pressure dropped so engine didnt seize. I just got a helicoil kit and helicoiled both the rocker cover bolts. You dont need sealant IMO. Mine has not leaked ever since.

The guy i bought my helicoil kit said that it is rcommended to helicoil any alluminium threads on an engine as the chances of the threads wearing out are much lesser.

Thanks for your help everyone. I am back now and in the end it was the bolt on the top on the rocker cover that was loose. ADAC came out and sorted it in the end. They were very very good.
