Ignition Switch

Is it possible to replace the ignition switch on my GTi? The thing that's in the ignition barrel where the key goes. If so, how does it come apart as I can't get it out of the steering column.

My car won't start by the way and I have been advised it may be the ignition switch that is the problem

There's a screw holding the barrel to the steering column, and also a tab that sticks out of the barrel to stop you pulling it out through the hole. Put the key in and turn it about half way between the Accessory and Ignition positions (there may be a mark that you can line the key up with). If you've got the position right then the tab can be pushed in and you can withdraw the complete barrel.

Thanks for that, I figured it out thanks to your help.

But now I have another problem! After getting the complete barrel out I took it apart to inspect the connection points - they seemed fine, but now I can't get the barrel back together properly. It physically is back together but the points aren't in the correct positions and nownothing is happening when I put the key in.

Has anybody had similar problems and how can I sort it? I have tried 5 times now and just can't get it to work. Am I best just getting a new barrel or what?

Today has been one of them days when I seriously consider selling up!

Thanks hengti, if I can't find a solution then I will have it! Just give me a couple of days to sort something out!

Pull the king-lead off the distributer or coil. Then with it all plugged in, use a screwdriver to turn the "rotating bit" that is connected to the wiring. I found it easiest to turn it until the starter engaged and then turn it back to the nearest position, i.e. ignition on in the position the barrel springs back to on its own. Turn the key in the barrel to the corresponding position and screw it back together- job jobbed

Thanks again, but that's half the problem - the starter doesn't engage, that's why I was messing with it in the first place!

That sounds like it could be the brown multiplug problem which stops the starter solenoid getting any voltage hence the starter not turning!

Sam, I may have misunderstood but haven't you taken the barrel apart?

The one I took apart wouldn't go back together only because it exploded like some sort of spring loaded trap ( :) ) and I couldn't find all of the bits to put it back together with again.

It must be possible though.

ed. If it's a problem with aligning the bar that's depressed to remove the switch, I guess you can only keep taking it apart and putting it back together again until it works as it should - ?

Connect a tmporary wire from the thick orange wire out of the ignition switch to the small spade on the starter solenoid. should get the starter engaging to use my method for re-assembling the barrel.

then do a search under "brown multiplug" for your original problem :)
