Ate Calipers From The 306(td)

Recommended Posts

MikeHunt79

I recently acquired some of these calipers, and I've seen a few people are using them on here with good results. :)

Gotta few questions tho:

1) I need discs. Now they are 247mm (i think) so should I order the 306 ones? Will the offset be OK? My car is a XRDT, which has solid (not vented) disks, so I'm not sure if my hubs are the same as a 1.6 or 1.9 gti?

2) Anyone know if Pug or anyone else sell replacement seals? One of mine has perished, and look like it will start leaking fluid everywhere if I put them in as they are now.

3) My master cylinder should be up to the job shouldn't it?

4) How are they compared to your old brakes? Noticeable difference or not?

Personally, I don't like the ATE calipers fitted to 306TD's and certainly they don't offer any advantage unlike say the 266mm brakes from the XSi/S16/HDi models.

You'll be fine with the standard MC assuming it's a 20mm GTi type one (it should be) and even a 19mm base model one will be fine, just with a smidgen more pedal travel.

You'll need 205 1.9 GTi disks (same as the 306 TD ones)

Personally, I'd not bother with the ATE calipers and just pickup some 205 1.9 GTi Girling ones - cheap as chips, and so long as the sliders move freely, they're much better than the Bendix and ATE designs.

Well the ATE's only cost me £15, but by the looks of it it's gonna cost more to rebuild 'em with new rubbers and things.

One of the rubbers has perished:

Anyway, I may get these rebuilt, if not, it would be good to go straight to some 266mm ones. :) It's not as if I have buckets of power, and my existing brakes are working well, so I'll keep an eye out for some more calipers.

That's only the dust guard seal and not critical - the fluid seals are well behind that.

Nice, I may as well get the discs and pads then. Vented discs should fade less than my current solid discs. :D

i presume these will be going on your turbo diesel mate?

if they are, you will need 1.6 discs for them to fit.

i use these calipers on mine as i had them for nowt and they have been absolutely fine with no probs. it runs omp cross drilld and grooved discs with ferodo sport pads. its been tracked and it suffered no fade whatsoever :D

there cheap calipers that are much newer and have probably had a much easier life than 1.9's.

Long time no post...

They're for my turbo derv... I've only had it fade with solids a few times, so vented should be good even if it does weigh a little more.

I'll be getting some 1.9 discs then. Cheers guys. :)
