Exhaust Sealant

Is anyone aware of types of exhaust sealant ,

 

I am looking at making my rear silencer repackable and i want something that will seal two metal faces , but preferably not go solid.

 

Any ideas ?

Thats quite a difficult one to call

Gun gum and silicone sealent will eventually go solid, only other thing im aware

of is fire putty, maybe applicable as it contains synthetic elastomer.

 

I have some in the shed, can do a test piece?

We use a silicone instant gasket type sealer at work. Its rated at 250 degree continous and 300 degrees for short periods. Should be find for a back box.

 

Not seen it go hard, but then I've never had it on anything for more than a year.

 

It's made by Wynn's and we just get it from our local motor factors

Back box shouldn't go up to 300 i wouldnt have thought , so i may give some of that a try ..

I finally got around to repacking the exhaust last night .

 

The next question is has anyone any experience on repacking ? How much should you put in ?

 

should it be loosely packed or crammed in ?

Hi Craig,

You cannot have it loosely packed otherwise it just wont work but on the other hand if you cram so much in that its solid then that wont work either - it needs to be on the softer side of being crammed in.

 

Usually i empty out all the old stuff (wear a dust mask and latex gloves, cover your arms and wear goggles if you feel its necessary) and take medium sized bits of packing probably 12" square and push it down under the pipe all the way along - push it firmly but not hard and work your way to both ends and around the pipe before putting the last of it in the middle.

 

I use normal exhaust paste to seal it, i clean off the old stuff before taking a file to the sealing area to make sure its flat then seal it using a reasonable amount of paste then pop rivet the cover back on - sometimes i will use a rubber hammer to just help the cover to get as far down as possible then refit the exhaust and run the car up warm to get some heat into the paste to cure it off.

 

Never had a noise test go over 99db yet.

Thanks for that , at the moment i have gone for something midway as you suggest , i will get the noise meter out to check the results .

 

I think i have to be under 98 @ 0.5 m or 96 @ 2m

forgot that i never updated progress on the re packable exhaust .

 

I followed all the instructions and managed to record a level of 94 at 0.5m

 

so smiles all round

how did you get on with the sealant.

 

i swear by loctite 5920 copper silicon sealant now. i don't even bother with exhaust gaskets, just a liberal coating of the funky orange goo seals them perfectly

All i could get my hands on at the time was some haematite (sp) red.

 

i put plenty on and it sealed fine
