Guest Jase&Stace Posted May 24, 2007 Hi, I decided to replace my clear rear clusters from my '90 GTI with some original ph2 rear lights but the wiring seems to be completely different and to be honest I'm no electrician. On my car I have one loom that ends with a brown plug with six wires (looks like the one on the instructions on here for the ph2 conversion) and a 'ribbon(?)' which looks like it feeds the passenger side. However the lights have a plug one side and then 3 smaller plugs whose wires are all wound into a cable. Do I have a ph1 or ph2 pug? - I have clear front indicators and red/black half leather interior but no PAS or sunroof, car is 1.9. Do I need ph1 lights? To be honest I spent three hours like an idiot last night trying to wire them with no success but want to understand if I can rather than pay someone to sort it out. cheers, Jason. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 25, 2007 If you have a black cloth that runs across the car it sounds like your car should have phase 1 lights fitted. What wires do you have when you take the offside light out? Both the phase 1 & phase 2 cars have a brown six pin plug at the nearside rear light but there is also a seperate loom which runs to the offside light with four more wires. The three plugs you have wrapped in black tape, if they are all two pin plugs (red, yellow & brown) then they are part of the phase 2 loom for the reversing, fog & number plate lights which can only fit in one place on the back of the nearside light. If your car is a phase 1 there should also be a single yellow & green earth wire that runs to the earth point in the boot sidewall aheead of the light unit. Can you take a picture of what you have in your car? Graham.
Guest Jase&Stace Posted May 25, 2007 (edited) Hi, Thanks for the reply - armed with a printout of your ph2 conversion I spent yesterday evening trying to put my new ph2 lights on with some success. I now have tail lights, brake lights and indicators by marrying up the four drivers side connectors to the 6-pin connector on the pax side. On the drivers side now I have a connector with a red and green wire, one with two green, one with two yellow, two single brown wires coming from the bumper and also a white one coming from the bumper. I'm presuming these are number plate, fog and reversing light? The only problem with these is not sure where to connect them in relation to the three 2-pin plugs on the other side of the car in the pax light fitting - I know your conversion guid gave this information but to be honest I was a little confused but then I have no electrical knowledge. Thanks for your help and thanks for the conversion article. Although frustrating it is satisfying to complete a job yourself rather than pay someone else to do it, even if it does take me a while....... The red & green wires (in a black connector with the pins @ 90' to each other? ) are for the rear window washer motor. The three two pin plugs for the number, fog & reversing lights are iirc white for the number plate lamps, brown is for the fog light & the reversing light plug should be red. They can only be fitted in the correct place on the back of the passenger side light as they are master keyed. Graham.
