Couple Of Questions About The Xs Engine

Recommended Posts

M_R_205

after rebuildign the xs engine i had i went to fire it up and to my supprise it did, almost instantly

however it will only start on full choke and then it revs/idles about 2800-3200rpm, ow can i lower this??

seccondly as soon as i knock the choke off or even consider going near it after its all warmed up (dosent take long at 3k lol) it konks out :P

and finaly i have one of those little piper x breather filters on, and loads of misty stuff comes out of it, is this normal??? could it be due to the fact i dont have one of those plates under the cam cover???

cheers for any advice

yeah a splash guard would help stop the crap coming out of the breather filter.. The idle can be lowered by adjusting the small bolt on the throttle pulley on the carburettor. Not sure about the concking out though.

when you put the pipercross filter on did you do away with the closed loop breather system? it sounds like its got a big air leak.

Closed loop breather system? not sure what you mean by that but theres just the small breather filter on the cam cover and the main air filter on top of the carb,

On the inlet manifold there are 2 connectors. One in the middle in front of the carb, if you change to a filter you need to block this off otherwise it will let air in. The other is at the back but that is for the brake servo, check it's not leaking.

i thought the one at the front connected to a coolent hose to warm everything up a bit? the one that comes out of the bulk head with the bleed screw on

That connects underneath.

The one im talking about is visable from the top.

If you have connected that front one to the water pipe then your in for a world of trouble.

If there was any coolant in the system and it got into the engine its going to be very hard to start.

i havent filled the coolent up yet, i decided to make sure it started before i messed on doing that and fitting the driveshaft gear linkages etc, when i try to start it spins over and every now and then just coughs,

well i tryed it again today to no avail, fitted a new carb/manifold gaskets, adjusted the idle screw from zero thread all the way up, and that made no difference, replaced the vac advance pipe with a frsh one, made no difference so i think il just try get my hands on a good carb and see what happens.

Before you do shell out for another carb, make absolutely sure the firing order is right on both the dizzy and the plugs. Its just that yours sounds exactly like mine was running - the needing huge amounts of choke, not idling or running even below 2000 rpm were all exactly the same. I'm ashamed to say that it took a garage to diagnose though! :)

No problemo, anything to avoid doing this research project I'm meant to be doing

Numbering the cylinders...

post-9744-1180187245_thumb.jpg

... the leads run from the dizzy like so (camera is sitting on top of battery)...

post-9744-1180187263_thumb.jpg

...and obviously the lead you can't see is number 3.

Hope that helps!

Check for a spark at each plug as well, to check the plug and lead are working.

ok, this car is starting to anoy me! after fully cahrging the battery i pull out all theplug leads fit them in the correct order and try to start it, nothing, not even a cough a spluter or a fart, (which it usualy does) so i pull out one of the spark plugs to check for a spark (which it was getting the other day) and nothing, so i pull another lead out to check that for a spark, and while cranking the back box explodes making the loudest! bang you have ever heard!!!! ever, im suprised the windows didnt shater!!!

backbox.jpg

ignore the stupid litle trim, that came with the car :) could the exhaust have been blocked causing it not to start, and also destroy the back box? what else could cause the lack of spark, plugs, leads dizzy cap and armare all new, so im guessing coil and ignition amp could be to blame? i dotn see why they would fail now when it fired up on thursday :S

thanbks Jrod and Casanova for your help, it is appriciated

I guess that's possible if there was lots of unburnt fuel. But surely the exhaust wouldn't have been hot as the car hasn't been running. If it helps, an XS backbox is only £21+VAT from GSF.
