ah250 0 Posted May 23, 2007 Hi... Thinking of lowering my CTI, as i'm planning to replace bushes/mounts & track rod ends etc. The existing set-up is pretty much standard as far as i can see (although it is fairly 'crashy', making me think that the shocks are possibly uprated)...??? OK, i'd like to drop the car and have the speedlines tucked up in the arches (like a lowered GTI i suppose). I'd also like to do it on the cheap . My understanding is use lowered front springs & then adjust the rear beam (so Mr. Haynes seems to suggest). How much do i drop (and how many 'clicks' on the rear), suggested manufacturer for front springs etc..... am i looking for lowered GTI springs????...... Any advice would be great. Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave My silver cti is lowered, 60mm and 2 splines at the rear (I think). If I ever get round to lowering my 309 gti beam to suit- it will all be replaced- I also have lowered spax struts/springs to fit up front- shame you're not closer as I have a few sets of un-needed lowering springs! Comparison with standard- the rear end rubbed badly with 15" speedlines and 185/55 tyres- the 45 profiles on those 15"momos don't rub Edited May 23, 2007 by steve@cornwall
ah250 0 Posted May 23, 2007 Hi again Steve....just post me a car it'll be alot easier!!!! Typically i was down 'yer way a few weeks back after having a few days in Polperro and a trip to Helston, yes it was Flambards. Are the 'bits' basically GTI gear, as i've been told lots of suspension bits aren't the same? How does yours ride being that low (are your shocks Spax also?)? GTI6BOY 29 Posted May 23, 2007 Steve@cornwall- what shocks have you up front at the mo? Have you cut the bumpstops down? If i put 55mm springs on the front then the car rides on the stops. so i was advised to cut the stops in half, now the shocks ground out and you get an almighty clunck even over a stone, so i put my stops back in for now. How do you overcome this?

How do you overcome this? Car was already lowered when I bought it- I have the invvoice somewhere, from memory it cost about 350 in the mid-late 90s. At present it seems to be original cti struts/shocks with unknown lowering springs and the beam lowered. Can't see it being much more at that price! Standard cti suspension is same set up as base models up front with , I believe cti specific struts, hopefully HenryYorke will read this and confirm / refute this. beam is as gti - although it's reputed to have a less meaty arb at the rear, both gti and cti seem to me to be 19mm? (come on Henry! help me out) Mine will be riding on gti front subframe, spax struts and lowering springs up front and new spax dampers on rear (donated by a previous project pug- new dampers were boxed in the boot ) If I get my ass in gear a 309 gti rear beam will find it's way on ,too!) I've had no problem with suspension bottoming out at all, even though the exhaust grounds out on speed bumps and I beached it once on a modest kerb! - I'll see if I can get some pics of the set-up before the present set up is torn out for the MI etc

ah250 0 Posted May 25, 2007 OK, chaps thanks for taking this thread sideways.... Lowered GTI springs will fit a CTI? Any suggestions on make/drop etc, oh wise one! PM me if you want to discuss what you have...
ah250 0 Posted May 25, 2007 Steve, Spax (not that i'm a fan) say that if you lower more than 40mm shorter shocks are required? Or is this the bumpstop scenario thats also being discussed....
ah250 0 Posted May 25, 2007 The other hopefully simple question is how much lower is a standard GTI against a standard CTI? If I buy 40mm 'GTI' lowering springs is that not going to lower my CTI by probably 65-70mm??
