Toad Ai606

Recommended Posts

Im looking to buy and fit a Toad Ai606 alarm but do I need to get an additional central locking motor for the passenger door as Ive been informed that it is passive and needs replacing to work properly (electrics arent my strong point OK :)). This is on a 1.9GTi with standard central locking but with no plipper by the way.

After having a bit of a further think Michael, i'm almost positive that you'd need to replace your motors as there is no control module for the central locking wire that comes from teh alarm to connect to when its pulls to earth.

If you dont have a plipper model alarm or locks then i'm fairly sure that driver door motor instructs the other locks to undo only when it is physically moved by the key in the lock, rather than some electrical signal.

This is the set i got for mine from maplins i think you used to be able to get a 2 motors set but i can't find it on their site anymore. but probably available elsewhere

you could also leave the existing central locking wiring loom (and boot motor) in place and just join it up to the new system wires as appropriate

Super Josh

If your car is a phase 1.5, without PLIP, then as Matt says you need a way of mechanically activating the drivers door to activate the rest of the system. Just buy the 2 way door motor from Maplin.

Part number

YD79L Car Door Lock 2W 156 in Stock £8.99

look here

Then fit that to the drivers door, to the original door rod and wire up to the alarm.

Cheers boys, as I said I am useless when it comes to electronics but just so Ive got this straight. If I get the maplins kit to replace my original door motors but leave the existing wiring in place for the boot motor etc when its all wired up to the toad it should unlock/lock all 3 motors ?

I shall be roping my mate in to help wire it in as he used to install alarms anyway but Id like to get it straight in my head if I can.

Basically...

On a Phase 1/1.5 car that didn't have remote CL as standard, you need to put an extra motor into the drivers door, which in turn activates the existing central locking motor/solenoid as if you were using the key (and hence opens the passenger door and boot as usual).

On a Phase 2 car that did have remote CL as standard, you don't need any additional motors and just wire the Toad straight into the RCL control box near the steering column.

Make sense?

I wondered why my replacement F reg drivers door had an extra motor bodged inthere! So this must be why.

Using the word "bodged" in conjunction with work done by an alarm installer? Surely not? ;)

Correct me if wrong but i dont think just fitting the 5 wire motor from maplins will allow your central locking to work with the alarm.

You will need the control module as well.

The additional wires are just to allow the motor to instruct the others to work one the primary is pulled(opened) or pushed(closed). You need the module itself to be able to connect the earth pulling control wire from the alarm.

This earth pulling wire can't be wired up to the lock solenoid itself.

The Toad Ai606 can drive a motor directly IIRC

be very wary if you buy one of those kits from maplins, i bought one and the 5 wire controlling motor burnt out in about 2 days then they sent me a replacement which did the same thing
