huzzer 0 Posted May 22, 2007 As you can see its pretty burnt! After some enthusiastic (but not severe) driving the car started making a rattling. I didnt think it was knocking, more a rattle but strong. Power dissapeared and I limped home. After removing number 2 shell to check this is what i found. Is this enough do you think to really lose power? Also, I know your meant to have the crank reground but how long would it last if I just changed the shells? Any thoughts? huzzer 0 Posted May 22, 2007 Just been cleaning out the sump and its full of flakes of bronze coloured metal. Is this a product of the shell damage or is it from something else?
huzzer 0 Posted May 22, 2007 It seems that the rattling is coming from the head. If a valve spring had snapped wouldnt it have dropped the valve onto the piston crown? I dont think it has hit but it is very noisy!
sutol 0 Posted May 22, 2007 That shell is scrap but you may get away with the crank if it is not scored, I would risk it if it looks ok. Can't comment on the top end just to say you may have buggered the cam bearings. Was there any oil at all in it

How can I definitively test if it is the cam bearings? Does that mean changing the caps?
Grim.Badger 15 Posted May 23, 2007 The bronze material is from the bearing and I suspect that small parts may have made their way up into the head and made a mess. I would at least get it all apart and checked or just swap the engine over with a good one.
huzzer 0 Posted May 23, 2007 Have done a compression test and all cylinders have excellent compression (250 psi on all four) so I dont think its a snapped valve spring or damaged valve. I just cant seem to tell exactly where the clattering is coming from. Are the crank shell conditions enough to make it seriously down on power? What exactly are the cam bearings as i've not seen any shells in the head?
16v205 9 Posted May 23, 2007 The bearings as such arnt replaceable in the head, there isnt shells or anything. The heads line bored with the caps and the cam runs in the bare aluminium Rich
