Rear Drum Wont Come Off

Recommended Posts

Guest silver 1600

The last 2 evenings I have been trying to replace both my rear drums and rear wheel bearings. As the drums were well worn and one had gone out of round the left hand side was a simple job :P but the right hand is another matter B) .

I have tried every thing to get it off and Im sure its not the ridge holding the drum on because i have broken 2 hub pullers trying to remove it ;) . It seems like the bearing is seized on the the sub axle Ive tried WD40 etc but still wont budge. Stupid thing is I had the drums off in March :)

Has any one had this before? Also is it possible to remove the the stub axle? looks to me like there is a allen key hole in the rear?

Any help would be wonderful as Im pulling my hair out now B)

Cheers guys Neil (silver 1600)

Yes i have tried that i think its not the shoes on the ridge :)

Its more that that as I broke 2 hub pullers and if it was shoes the retainer clips would have broken before the puller B)

Right i have thought about it a bit more now :)

what I think i will do is because i have new rear drums I will brake the old one up or cut it off. So then I can get

a large hydraulic puller on the case :P

Then if that don't work I will have to cut the drum an bearing away as much as poss then try to shatter it ;)

I will get it off some how B)

Why not just hammer the stub axle out?

Why not just hammer the stub axle out?

yeah I was thinking that but which way do they come out?

do they hammer from the front side out though the back of the radius arm?

Or from the back of the radius arm out thought the front?

From the front, they come out the back.

If you leave the nut on and use a drift will save you damaging the threads.

Ok I managed to get the drum off this afternoon :D

What i did was drill out the bolt holes in an old drum then get some get some longer bolts the same thread as the wheel studs. Then used a large socket as a packer between the stub axle and the old drum and used it as a makeshift hub puller :P

Worked perfect pulled it right off all the way and the bearing was in one hell of state

Any way cheers for all the pointers

That's pretty genius! It's fantastic what your mind can come up with when it needs to.
