Cleaning Carpets

Recommended Posts

Guest Jase&Stace

Hi,

I'm read many topics on cleaning bumper trim, waxing and polishing etc but wondered what other people would recommend to clean the red gti carpets?

Mine is in pretty good nick but a little dirty in places. I wouldnt have thought it had been taken up before so.... (A) Is it much work to take everything out and remove the carpet? and (:P What would people recommend to get it back to somewhere near new?

Cheers.

Hi

Well I cleaned my carpet the other weekend. Unfortunately I don't have before and after photos, but put it this way, it was minging when I got the car a year and half ago and it hadn't been hoovered or anything since. It had a bottle of brake fluid spilled in the back and was covered in oil and tar stains etc. Was a complete state.

I took the carpet out which is very easy, only takes about 30 mins to an hour to remove the trim to do this. The added bonus is you can inspect the sound deadening for moisture, trace any leaks and check for any rust in the floor pan.

But anyway, what I did was first beat the carpet using a shoe against the backing to agitate all the dirt and dust. Best to hold the carpet at one end with one hand, so it's hanging vertically, whilst you beat the back with the other hand. Hoover the carpet as you go but spend a good amount of time beating throughout this stage. Once I'd got as much of the dirt out as I could, I then used an old toothbrush and white spirit to clean some of the tar and oil stains. It didn't ruin the colour on mine. Then I sprayed what cleaning products I happened to have in the flat on it - Autoglym interior shampoo, and Shout stain remover. I also sprinkled washing powder for clothes all other the carpet, and using a bucket of warm water and a stiff bristled brush I soaked the carpet and started scrubbing away. Finally, I chucked it in the bath and used the shower to rinse it all off and then left it to dry for a day (would be easier if you can do all of this outside with a hose etc).

I ended up with a carpet that looked almost new except for 2 tiny tar spots I couldn't shift. I was very happy with it :P

I'll upload some pics to my photobucket account and stick them on here in a minute. Took them a couple of days ago as I'm selling my car. Not great but they give an idea.

Guys,

Cheers for that - GLPoo they look really good. As I say I don't have any stains on the carpet, they're just a bit grubby.

Hopefully weather good at weekend so will give your suggestion ago, have a good outdoor area and hose so should be a hoot :)

Either way I'm convinced that its worth the effort to do it myself rather than spend £50 on egay or somewhere.

Thanks,

Jason

I only have a before picture:

Taking it out was much easier than trying to do it in situ.

Firstly I vacuumed the hell out of it, then sprayed it all over with a strong detergent. It had a good scrub, then it was blasted off with a power washer. Came up almost like new! :)

took mine to the jet wash and blasted it with foam for 5 mins (you see the crap poring off it) then blasted it with clean water for 5 mins

Put it in a bin bag then hung it on the line.

Came out like new

I was going to say just rub over the marks with a clean cloth, in situ, and a solution of washing powder- dishwashing brush for stubborn marks. Then I saw Mr. Poo's results. I've changed my mind.

Mine was worse than Paintguy's to begin with :o

It really does makes such a difference, and I certainly wouldn't have expected it to come up as good as it did.

Having the carpet out the car and being able to beat the dirt out of it really is worthwhile as I don't think you'll get anywhere near as much dirt out of the pile from just vacuuming alone, even though it's only a very shallow pile. Not unless you've got a really powerful vacuum anyway. I bought a green carpet off someone on here a year and a half to 2 years ago and it looked reasonably clean. But the seller lived in Cornwall, and I spent about a hour beating the dirt out the carpet and it was 90% sand ;)
