Ht Lead Earthing Or Something?

Recommended Posts

Anton green

Im a few steps closer to finding out what it isnt which is causing my batt light to stay on after help from this forum, but not got it sorted yet!

My battery light is on on the dashboard, dimly at low rpm and brightly at high rpm. Is it possible that I have some leaking of HT voltage which is earthing on something and causing these symptoms? (making me lose electricity too)

I've been away a while and so am not totally up to speed with what you have and haven't done to cure the problem.

Have you checked to see if the voltage at the battery terminals increases with engine speed?

Have you checked the voltage at the alternator excitation terminal (cable unplugged from alternator)?

Have you replaced the alternator?

PM me if you fee that you're going over old ground for my sake :)

If you get electricity "leaking" from the HT leads you will get a serious misfire on that cylinder, so, if you're not experiencing misfires, you can cross that one out!

Your problem should be somewhere on the alternator, probably is not charging the battery.

Main cause would be a broken or untensioned alternator belt. Check it!

If not, check that you are getting about 14 volts from the alternator output to a ground point in the car when the engine is turned on. If you are, then your battery is charging.

Thats not true, its quite common for the HT leads to induce currents via interference in the low coolant sensor wires in phase two 205s without any misfiring.

I've never heard of it in the alternator circuit as the HT leads shouldn't go anywhere near them.

it's not the thin wire on the alternator on the wrong terminal?

no, its not that -the problem started up all of a sudden without me changing anything.

yes, the voltage rises with engine speed, it reads ~10V when not running and about 12.5V when ticking over, up to about 14.5V maximum at higher rpm. Whatever it is seems to me to be draining the batt

The voltage at the alt exitation terminal is near enough the same as the battery terminal

I cannot see why the alternator would be my problem, it has barely done 2000 miles from new, so Im thinking it is more likely to be something else (not saying it isnt the alt tho)

Im still stumped, the alt is charging as it does make a difference at the batt terminals... :P

The alternator is knackered, simple as that. Probably one of the diodes in the rectifier pack has blown. The fact that it's only done 2000 miles just means you're unlucky! (or not, if it's still under warranty)

BUGGER

the batt light does occasionally extinguish when cornering hard tho...?? (*I point out in hope*)

Yeah, I agree. Sounds like a dead alternator.

And I bet it isn't actually new, more like reconditioned by some total f***wit who shouldn't be allowed to clean toilets, let alone 'recondition' car parts for a living. Whoops, rant.
