Rebuilt Engine Running In - With Mot?

Recommended Posts

Ahl

I'm rebuilding a mi16 that will hopefully be running soon, and i'm not sure how to run it in, being that the car wouldn't be road legal.

I know to run the cam in for 15min or so, then to run the rings (and other bits) in on the road.

The problem is the car still needs an MOT, so how would you suggest I can do all this, but legally?

i was in the same situation with my engine last year. I had it run in on track (towed there) then had it MOT's after that

Oh wait, I just had a brainwave!

I guess theres no reason why it couldn't take me 100 miles to get to a prearranged MOT, providing I was driving around the area in circles. :P Idling for the MOT should be alright after that.

Does anyone see a problem with that?

I have a customer with the same dilemma however Ive just booked a mot 50 miles away, with 200 miles worth of back lanes in between

y cant you drive it to the mot and then run it in? they dont have to drive/run it for very long?

My understanding is that rings want bedded in ASAP, and who knows how long the MOT station will leave the car running.

Last time I went for an MOT, the bastards had left the thing running until it ran out of fuel, then failed it on the emissions test! Wankers.

I thought the rules were you had to drive directly to the MOT station.

I'd go on a cheap airfield day or something

when they done mine they let me sit in the seat and do it - find a friendly place and explain to them... im sure they wouldnt mind?

If you have to leave it on fast idle for 15 mins to run the cam in i cant see how an extra minute or so will make that much difference?

Define straight there.

All the direct runs I've used to get a car to an MOT station have been at least 10 miles drive & the station I use is just over three miles away. I use the back roads around here & could easily cover 50 miles if I wanted to without seeing hardly any other cars on my way to an MOT.

You want the car nice & warm for the emissions test so it will have to be run for a little while at the station.

Graham.

from askthepolice.co.uk..

"if you are driving your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged appointment for an MOT and you must take a direct route to the garage (but the vehicle must be insured). " So i suppose the mot station could be far away but you must take a dirrect route there.

Sorted then Ahl, book an MOT in brighton and just drive down here  Plenty of time for mixed load runs for run-in purposes :)

Just dont be so anal and drive without mot for a while, you only get a fine anyway and how often do you get stopped?? I havnt been in years. And I seriously doubt the police would get a map out and check you are taking the most direct root somehow!

Haha, that would be ok, but I'm sure I read of a maximum distance somewhere before.

Oh, i'm not anal at all :) just prefer to do it a legal way if possible. (Prepares for lots of replies from all of the holier-than-thou members...)

It not actually 'Illegal' persais to not have an Mot. It's punishable by fine but not a criminal offence as such.

just drive it around in circles as you say then if you are stopped, say you are going straight there.

But i wouldn't worry about the mot (famous last words), my mum was about 9 months late for hers!

I wouldn't worry too much about the route you are taking to get there. I think the Police would be more concerned about the fact that you actually have one booked. If you do then you should be pretty well covered.

Just thinking about it actually, I might start to get a bit dizzy once I'm on the 50th loop of the roundabout...<_<

Think it's more of a concern if the car isn't taxed, as it could be awkward if you're spotted by number plate recognition devices. I had a similar dilemma early this year & drove to Burgess Hill for my MOT ... afterwards I think someone said there was a legal limit to the distance you could drive to your pre-arranged MoT. 30 miles? I think the police would have to be pretty anal to go into that detail, especially if you explained your reasoning. They're usually pretty reasonable & sensible PROVIDED you are polite! After all, you have taken the trouble to take the car to an MoT, & would hardly bother with that if you didn't intend taxing the car.

Why not ask the garage if you can pay for someone's time for half an hour to sit shotgun whilst you drive on their trade plates? (You do still get the red trade plates, don't you? not seen any for ages!)

Depends where you're driving the car from? :D You could always say you picked the car up from less than 30miles away if that is the case, unless they caught over that distance away from the Mot garage you specify of course!

Another idea i've heard of before is booking an mot at a garage not far away, driving there, only missing it and going further to another place you've also booked the mot at, won't do you any favours with the closer garage but covers you! :(

I had the same issue, so took a long drive to the MOT and told them not to let it idle.
