Xu5 Keeps Cutting Out When Slowing Down

Recommended Posts

if I'm slowing down at a junction, clutch in, revs die down and teh engine cuts out. sometimes I can start it up again and it'll idle smooth as a baby's arse, others it'll need some beans after starting back up before it'll idle sensibly. any ideas? apart from that the thing runs so sweet! I's pretty shocked just how well it runs tbh.

Does it idle high? though. Sounds like the start of "hunting". Perhaps the SAD / AFM / Throttle body crew / dirty breather pipes. Mine used to do that, then with a sticky starter solinoid too!

idles around 1000rpm when warmed up. from cold it's up & down from 1000 to about 1500, but stays firmly put once warm. lso this cutting out doesn't happen when cold, only when warmed up.

sounds like you need to give it a damn good service and set up. Its a fuel/air issue if it changes with temperature. Although I have heard of dodgy brake servo's causing the stalling at junctions due to excess vaccuum.

Start by cleaning out all the breather pipes, this includes the SAD/Cold start device, but it sounds to me like you may want to try a new one anyway, from the cold start issues.

from cold it's fine, just a bit up & down on the idle. once warm it idles mooothly, but cuts out when the RPM's drop once I'm out of gear, coming up to a junction. if I rev it in neutral, doesn't cut out. usually it'll start straight away and idle fine, but sometimes it'll start but needs revving up to about 3k/4k before it'll settle down and idle properly again.

I had this trouble with mine when I got it back on the road after much work. I'd over-advanced the ignition & idle was far too high. As a quick fix to satisfy MoT man, I screwed throttle stop out to reduce the idle, which helped a little. Then I found it would cut out on deceleration. Once I'd sorted the ignition timing & reset the idle with the throttle stop screw, it stopped cutting out.

This is a long winded way of suggesting you check the TPS (throttle position switch), as obviously my tinkering with the throttle stop had upset the setting of that.
