hi

Can some one answer the following.....

what the the syptoms of the following componats failing or about to go BANG!!!!

1, ignition module

2, ignition coil

3, HT leads

4, spark plugs

5, dizzy cap

6, rota arm

7, dizzy it self

8, afm (air flow meter)

on a separate not...and these..

9, fuel pump

10 tach relay

as i need to try find out if my problems are ignition or fuel related....

cheers

1. misfire generally at higher revs.

2 Misfire under load.

3. Not running on all 4 cylinders.

4. Look at the condition and colour.

5,6 7 similar to above

8. Idle probs, incorrect mixture, flat spots.

9, struggle to start, loosing fuel pressure

10, Gets very hot, fail to prime pump, car cuts out.

All you need to do is crack off the main fuel line 17mm and crank the car over, put it in a bottle or something and see what happens. Should get a good flow. Listen for the injectors or get access to node on the injector plugs making sure they have a signal.

Spark. Check the king lead first just put an old plug in it and crank it over then go over all 4.

Depends how they are failing!

In general a misfire under load is a symptpn of a weak spark, whatever the cause. However, some components have multiple failure possibilities...

1) Intermittant starting issues, intermittant total loss of power, miss fires...

2) Miss fire under load, intermittant total loss of power...

3) Miss fire under load, running on 3 cylinders (but rare to be this bad)

4) Agreed

5) Miss fire under load...

Basically ignition is pain in the bum as many things have similar or the same issues. Also note that a duff coil can take out an ignition amp, replace amp and it appears fine for a while than starts again!

Try describing the problems and let us guess...

Mmmm ok the i think it might be ignition related.

The problem im having is this..... but also barein mind the whole ignition has not been touch/replaced for 2 yrs.

Normal driving is ok but the car feels a little life less and performance is a bit dull.

High speed motorway driving is worse as it seems to take a while to get up to speed and once there every so often on each trip i take it sort of loses all power for a split second then it returns. sort of if the car flips a switch then back again. the revs dont fall but the car jerks for that split sec then it come ok ish again. Plus i think its getting a bit thursty in the go lotion department...

any help appriciated

Dull / lifeless could be ignition timing. If it has been tuned for 95 RON, this is what you'd expect. Also possible that cam timing is out by a tooth but less likely.

Blocked/dirty air filter wouldn't help the economy or poke either.

The misfire could be coil/ignition amp related. I've felt similar from a dying coil on my 309 prior to it getting much worse. Also possibly a dizzy cap or rotor arm, take em off and check to see if they are OK or a bit rough - you'd be amazed how bad they can be and still work!

Check the economy using the trip meter versus what it takes to brim the tank a few times. Ignition timing will help but a bust vac advance is hard to notice apart from the loss of a few mpg. Also idle mixture can have a bigger effect than you'd expect. could be worth giving it a spring clean, e.g. throttle body and AFM.

ok, renewded the air filter.... no difrence

not yet got a new coil or amp but will this weekend!

dizzy cap and rita arm is in ok condition.

cleaned the throttle and afm...time will tell.

how do i know if the vac advance is broken? and how easy is it to replace?????

Adjusting the ignition timing is free and most likely to correct the problem.

Vac advance most likely issues:

Pipe has fallen off one end or the other - obvious if you look at the right places (I have tyrrped mine on after it fell off a few times!)

Bust diaphram - suck on the pipe, you should not be able to suck any air (bar a bit to build up a vacuum). If you can then there is a hole in the diaphram, e.g. it is buggered.

Replacing it isn't too hard. Couple of screws outside and a wiggle to release it inside the dizzy. If you have a new one in hand you will see how it attaches inside.

N.B. It doesn't impact power though (not at full throttle anyway), only economy so is not the answer to all your woes.

ok

pipe is attached.

sucked on it and im not sure so im gonna buy a new one just in case.

took old one out but i did have to wiggle it and some how it came off.

it has a long bit protruding from it that has a hole in it, i take it this hole locates on to a bit inside the dizzy itself????

oh yeh £24 from pug ...not rearly cheep to say its a holllow tin space ship
