The tap may just be the hydraulic lifters arent full with oil yet, they should fill themselves after a bit of running.

you need to loosen the 3 bolts/centre bolt (depends on which version pulley is fitted) on the cam pulley before tensioning the belt, this ensures that the cams are in the correct position :P

here is a pic of the type you loosen the centre bolt.

as Richie said, the tap is likely to be empty lifters, just make sure you have a good quality oil filter with a non-return valve to prevent the head from draining when parked up.

cool yet to take it out a run, just somone pointed out that the hold for timing the bottom end is on the outer part of the pulley which is joined by the rubber dampner. an this can move with wear???

start fine so suggest timing not out so ill get her build n out a run lol

cheers

Yes your right, it seems the bottom end pulleys on these are a bit shizzel.

For instance, mid 6 swap for my 205 at the week, the cam pulleys was out by a 3rd of a turn compared to the bottom end pulley, Anthony was luckily there and said yeah i've heard of it before, and the engine ran before we took it out, so yeah just be careful :P

Id give it a small amount of time, as Richie said it could be the tappets needing time, but these heads have a habbit of tappating due to dodgy valve guides. Couldn't comment further though myself as i've not experienced it ;)

If the bottom pully rubber has slipped (so the hole is not correct in relation to the recess in the block) you can fit a replacement lower pully to time the crank.

Gti6 heads are notorious for tapping when disturbed which comes from the valve guides either not being changed or the valve getting a knock during refitting. Check it out on the 306gti6 forum click me
