Who Manufactured The 405 T16/mi16 Transfer Boxes

Recommended Posts

Just out of interest, what company made the MI16/T16 transfer boxes? Was it Dangel? Just a thought as another vehicle of some description must use the same box, or simular box same internals. otherwise it would have been far too expesive for them to produce in such few numbers, also if this is the case, then it might be easier to find parts, as they are no longer available through peugeot.

Citroen BX used the same 4x4 running gear if thats any help. No help on who actually made it though.

I bet it was a custom job specifically for the T16. The turbo unit was also from Garrett (variable pitch vanes or something I think).

I read somewhere that the T16 gearbox was an adapted version of the FWD box in one of the bigger citroens.

Thats the Citroen SM gearbox, but its not in the 405 T16, its in the 205 T16! And a Lotus too IIRC.

And at least one Masseratti iirc so all you need to do is find a scrapyard that specialises in exotic super cars :P

I'm sure the 405 was a similar story. They use a different gearbox to all other pugs (the ME, instead of the MA or BE), surely they can't have designed a completely new gearbox for a production run of just over 1000 cars? :P

Now that you mention it I'm 100% sure Cybernck said that the 405 T16 has a different gearbox, ME sounds right as well.

Best bet would be the Partner vans as iirc they have 4x4 systems based on the BE boxes, or buy Cyberncks T16 transmittion as I think its still up for sale.

The T16, Mi16x4 and lesser GLx4/BX 4x4's drivetrain are all different components in thier own right, not mixable iirc.

I thought that the transfer boxes were all similar. Maybe not similar enough to be swappable, but variations of the same basic design?

The T16 transfer box may be slightly more different to the others as iirc it's the only one that was fitted to an iron block.

they all work in the same way yes, and have similar parts, but i know parts from the different systems are not interchangable.

The mi16x4 and T16 have a Torsen diff, which i don't think the lesser models had.

It's not the gearbox per se but the transfer box that is the weak point. This is especially true on the MI16 4x4. The T16 has a much stronger unit to cope with the torque. As such, I still reckon that it's a one-off jobbie especially for the T16. I'd be amazed if you could find the same part on another model but I await to be corrected.

it just seems to seem so bazare that they designed so many different units be it gearbox or transfer box for such a small production run of the cars, must have cost them a fortune, maybe thats why the mix4 is so weak as they didnt test it properly, and didnt design it to cope.....i dont know, looking at www.mi16x4.info, the transfer box and internals look identical to those i have just taken out of my mix4 transfer box, and thats a suposid T16.

The 405 T16 was originally intended to be a 10k cars production run iirc so costs wont have been as extreme as they seem. I doubt that means they have 9000 odd transfer boxes in storage though.

Afaik the transferbox on the 405 Mi16x4 is the same as the one in the 405 T16.

So there's quite a few cars produced with these then.

it's pretty simmilar, but not the same and you have to use the TB, propshaft and

rear Torsen diff together and in that case you can use either gearbox with it.

kutija would know more about this as he's dissasembled a few TB's :D.

Has anyone actually ever taken apart the transfer box or rear diff on a 4bie?

They are quite interesting actually, quite complex concidering there age but then i think that may be something of an illusion as to me i always think of that being a bit of a dark age but really the cars were really advanced back then i guess, more so than you normally realise. Anyone else find this?

I do find it quite facinating though, i love taking things apart and seeing how they work and it a bonus if it works again when you put it back together!

When my transfer box locked the back wheels up on my MIx4 i made it 2 wheel drive, and pulled the transferbox to bits to see hwta the problem was, and oneof the cogs had sheared its teeth and jammed up the diff going to the back!

Very complex unit it is and heavy too!!!
