d-9 0 Posted May 14, 2007 I been trying to get one of my drums off for a while, after much abuse with a hammer and bar I decided to buy a puller from halfords. That lasted about 30 seconds, so i made one: Please ignore the welding, I dont have any gas for the mig I figured the diy one out of 4mm angleiron would last a little longer...must have been a good 2 minutes! Anyone got any ideas how to get the bastard thing off?
welshpug 1,666 Posted May 14, 2007 yep, its easy push the drum back so that the lip isnt stopping the shoes from moving. slacken the handbrake cable put a flat bladed screwdriver in through a wheelbolt hole onto the handbrake mechanism's lever on the trailing brake shoe and push, it should slide back behind the shoe if the pivot isn't seized. pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted May 16, 2007 Undo the hubnut? Take the puller back, I've got a draper one of those & its help me get several drums off, one when the inner bearing race was seized to the stub axle before now without breaking. They should take a lot of stick, thats a faulty one imo. Graham.
d-9 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Turns out this was the most seized on drum brake ive ever seen. After getting in a strop i cut the back plate off and removed the brake shoes. Then belted the crap out of it with a sledge hammer. Then belted it some more. Then cut the drum off with the grinder. In future, all cars i buy will have discs on the back. chris1986 1 Posted May 17, 2007 did you try a slide hammer. usually gets the tightest of ones off one way or another
pugrallye 0 Posted May 17, 2007 that looks like a gay laser item to be, crack and cry at the first sign of resistance
d-9 0 Posted May 17, 2007 did you try a slide hammer. usually gets the tightest of ones off one way or another Nah, im always worried about stripping the threads. Given that I went apes*it with a huge sledge hammer on the back of the drum and it didnt come off, Im fairly sure that a slide hammer on the wheel bolt holes wouldnt have shifted it. Yeah, was a s*ite laser item, wouldnt advice against buying one. Didnt take long to make my replacement, and that shifted a couple of drums off a different beam even after I bent it. DaveW 6 Posted May 18, 2007 Oh the fun of drums, i had to use a proper puller with a hydraulic ram to get mine off!
