Fresh Oil Around The Spark Plug Holes?

Recommended Posts

Anton green

Since the head gasket swap theres been a few different things which need sorting out, Im not sure about this one though.

After I drive it there seems to be a puddle of fresh oil around the top of the spark plugs, I presume this is coming from the cam cover seal where it isnt sealing properly against the rubber 'O' rings around the spark plug holes. What can I do about this though!?? I have painted my cam cover and dont want oil all over it every time the engine runs

Also I read in the haynes book, the Mi16 engine when you replace the cam cover to head rubber seal, the seal wont actually seal properly if it is a grey rubber seal (as opposed to black) and you have an early engine. Now I dont know if my engine is one of these early ones or not but I do have the grey seal AND an oil leak. Haynes says to apply silicone sealer to various parts around inside the cam cover, but their picture is useless. Does anyone know what Im talking about?

take your cam cover off and put a thin smear of silicon around the lip where the cam cover seal fits round, then put a thin smear on the face of the gasket where it meets the head. I always do mine this way and it never leaks unless disturbed.

When did you last change the O-ring for the spark plugs ? They are not expensive , but require you to remove the cam cover to change them.

Hmmn!

I do have a couple of these which were 'left over' after I requested a garage put the head and cam cover back together with new parts for me...

The cam cover will be coming off and I'll be doing their job properly tomorrow.

I am a little concerned about the note in the Haynes manual (note 40, page 2B-7) which states:

"From early 1992 a modified camshaft cover gasket has been fitted in production to 1905cc models. The later type of gasket can be identified from its grey colour (the earlier type of gasket was coloured black). The later tyope of gasket can be fitted to earlier engines, but the following proceedure must be followed when fitting the later type gasket to any engine.

a) Apply silicone sealant to the corners of Nos 1 and 5 camshaft bearing caps, then after refityting the cover tighten the securing bolts to stage 1 torque wrench setting in the order shown.

 Start the engine, and run it at idle speed for 10 minutes with the bonnet closed.

c)Open the bonnet and check for signs of leaks. If evident, do not tighten the bolts further, but remove the cover to establish the cause, then repeat the fitting operations."

Where do I start?? Where are the camshaft bearing caps? which ones are number 1 and 5? Why might the engine leak if I do everything it states??

Thanks All!

Anton
