Car Won't Start In Wet!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

Got a slightly curious problem. Car starts and runs perfectly in the dry. However when wet it won't start. Sometimes it'll have a go and run really rough at about 500rpm before dying.

Got to try to find a new dizzy cap tomorrow (anyone know who would stock a ducellier one in High Wycombe area (the usual saturday suspects (allparts and halfrauds) have turned up a blank. Don't really fancy a genuine pug one as apparently they're about fifty quid! The cap has gouges to the posts inside. I suspect the rotor arm has worn somehow and is allowing the arm to scrape the posts (i'll be checking the dizzy bearings to make sure they arent knackered!)

Funny thing was this happened just after doing a timing belt/speedo cable/fuel filter/ SAD (known good and tested) change. I can't see how that would have affected it though.

Anyone got any ideas as to common areas to check for porblems. Spent loads of time playing with 205's (this is my 4th) but as i can;t always replicate the problem fault diagnosis isn't easy!

Cheers

Rich

right i think i've got this narrowed down to a fuel pump issue (finally managed to get it to not start when i had my kit there! Got nice fat spark but no firing. Opened up the fuel pump relay and manually closed the contacts and away it goes.

Anyway when i turn the key the fuel pump does not prime. Never has as far as i can recall. I've tried a few relays (i've got a few spares!) and none of them cause the pump to prime.

Can anyone think of a reason why this may occur and how i can get the pump to prime?

cheers

Rich

What do you mean with "prime"? The fuel pump should only run as long as the engine is cranking or otherwise running, just turning the ignition on shouldn't lead to the pump running.

Flick the starter with the ignition and you should here the pump prime but should only prime for 1 or2 seconds.

cool. i shall give it a try. I was thinking that this may be related to my changing of the fuel pipes (only the rubber ones in the engine bay. if theres a tiny leak would this cause it to lose pressure while turned off and be unable to build it back up again fast enough to start? Failing that any ideas as to what may cause the fuel pump to run intermitantly?

cheers

The tachy relay would be the most likely cause. I've been told that they often have dry solder joints, if so then warming them up with a iron will cure it. It could also cause intermittant operation.

A failure to prime would only cause it to take longer to start and a small leak would not stop it getting up pressure. However, fuel leaks are SERIOUSLY BAD for the heath of your car. If you have one then fix it before you end up with a fire...

The tachy relay is what turns the pump on and off so either it is a fault with this or the signals to it and first choice is probaby the relay itself.
