KaspaCti 0 Posted May 12, 2007 Hi all, I need to change the steering rack gaiters on my PAS rack. The rack is currently off the car and both gaiters have seen better days!. I think I can see how to fit the drivers side gaiter (track rod end off and slide on with plenty of grease?). The passenger side gaiter has got me stumped though . I can't see how I'm going to get a new gaiter over the stud that the PAS ram connects to. Can this stud be removed, or am I just being a numpty and missing something obvious? Any help from someone who has done this would be very much appreciated! Cheers Sean
Edp 67 3 Cars Posted May 12, 2007 I'm going to be doing this very soon too and was looking at these pictures. I know its also covered in the hayned manual.
KaspaCti 0 Posted May 12, 2007 I had a look at those as well, the problem I think I'm going to have is getting the new gaiter over the stud seen on the end of the rack section shown as No 5 in the second picture. I've been trying to remove the stud this afternoon but it doesn't want to budge
KaspaCti 0 Posted May 13, 2007 Bump! Sorry for bumping this topic but I'd be really grateful if anyone has any ideas. Cheers Sean
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted May 13, 2007 I usually take the whole rack apart. The stud can't be removed as it is fixed to the toothed rack. Remove pinion assembly. Take out the toothed rack completely, fit new gaitor, slide rack back in (re-grease well) and fit other gaitor.

Cheers Hilgie, To remove the rack completely I presume that I need to remove one of the track rods (inner rod, not just track rod end)? I was hoping to avoid this as there is no play at all in the track rods, so I didn't want to disturb them really. Cheers for the info on the stud, at least I can stop trying to remove it now If I remove the track rod in order to slide the rack out, can I buy a new locking washer seperately for when I put it back together or does it only come with a new track rod? Sorry for all the questions, I'm beginning to think it might have been easier to buy a new steering rack Bit naffed off working on cars after changing discs and pads on a friends megane in the pouring rain today
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted May 14, 2007 Yes remove the inner rod. I always reuse the washer as it is some kind of toothed washer...just bend the teeth back and turn the balljoint with a molegrip. Then it should come off.

Higgy 0 Posted May 14, 2007 I also wondered this when I had to change the gaiters. But as I was fitting PAS minus the ram I just cut off the stud. It was certainly a head scratcher Higgy.
