Car Seriously Down On Power

Recommended Posts

hexhamstu

just replaced the head after some piston valve collisions, timed the engine up it seems to run ok but its seriously down on power. doesnt really sound like its misfiring but it can hardly make it to 70mph, after a bit it stopped idling then failed to start altogether, left it 10 minutes and it started up again.

car was sitting for some time 8 months or so before the head got swapped. any clues? there was very little fuel in it so i was thinking the fuel filter could be blocked up by dirty fuel? got a day off on monday so was hoping for a complete list of things to try.

thanks for any help

after using the search function, ive read the valve spacing has to be perfect, i used the cams out of the old head in the new head, will i need to re-space the "bucket things" (technical term)? could this be the route of my problem?

another thing i thought i might add the exhaust popped a fair few times on a down shift, and the airflow meter cover is missing and has been replaced by a few rows of tape to keep the water out. issue here?

You will more than likely need to re-shim your head (spacers under the "bucket things"), along with that and slighty out cam timing will loose you alot of power.

Sorry i cant be much help

The mi16 has hydraulic tappets, so you should have no problem there. Does the head sound ok? It'll sound awful if one of the tappets is faulty.

Water getting into the AFM could easily cause a big loss of power plus popping (overfueling).

Hi !

If your exhaust is popping on over-run and down shift that inicates lean mixture  , you can check mixture roughly by yourself if you have lambda sensor and multimeter , also check colour of spark plugs (it must be light tan to rust brown) - add more fuel until the popping goes away

And you must have that OE AFM cover because the moisture gets inside and can damage the meter seriously , if it's not allready broken :o

Hope this helps :(

Did you actually put new fuel in? It does go off.

If that doesn't help then its prob the AFM, as has already been said they really need the cover.
