Starting Problem After New Engine

Recommended Posts

johny105_y2k

hi i've done a search and found some helpful bits of info all of which i've tried. to no avail.

its a 89 1.6 gti

the car wont turn over since i've fitted the new engine

battery on > ignition on > dash lights (ok)> turn to crank CLICK no power at the starter traced wire 46(thats what the haynes book says) its not broke checked all fuses all ok. put a wire from the B+ to the solenoid spade and it turns over so the earth is good. its just not turning over on the key.

i was thinking maybe there is an immobilizer(sp) what i dont know about?

anyone any ideas? tips or tricks for me? anything would be greatly appreciated

cheers in advance johny

check the connections at the brown multiplug in the engine bay, if it has power at the 'dash' side of the brown plug the its just a bad connection, if not its either a broken wire or immobiliser issue. Both of which can be overcome by running a new wire direct from ignition position 3 to starter motor.

so does the brown multi come straight from the dash? or does it go via the fuseboard?

cheers johny

Having just spent ages re-wiring this bit I can say that there is a huge voltage drop in the cable across the brown connector which will give you the no start problem! I ran a new piece of wire from the large loom that sits on top of the lhs top engine mount. If you open this up and find the wire (it is the one with the number on it next to a "t" point - perhaps light blue or a greyish blue? ) remove the large wire that runs to the solenoid via the connector and run a new SUITABLE piece directly to the solenoid. Do not use crimps or scotchlocks as this will give you agro in the future solder only! Have a look at one of my other threads electrical gremlins!

Cheers

Michael

Brown multiplug is after the fuseboard.

I have also seen large voltage drops before the brown multiplug with the starter disconnected (!) so it is not only this one connector (although it probably doesn't help).

A quick and factory feel bodge is to run a second wire in parallel from just after the immobiliser to the starter. You can get piggy back connectors that allow you to fit the new and original wire to the back of the starter motor. A bodge but one that works!

P.S. Starters can also contribute to the problem but bits of wire are cheaper to try!

I ran the 46 wire to a separate 40a relay, then ran the relay straight to the starter solenoid - not only has it cured my none start issues, the starter also turns and fires the car up much quicker now as well ;)

Check the Emerald loom linkin my sig for info.

Prolly a good idea to run it through a relay, Just think how many times my warp milage 205 has had that key turned!

I will be wiring in a cut out switch, cat 2 immob, and separate push button starting system once I have a bit more time so will do it then! :)
