rallyman 0 Posted May 7, 2007 FYI if you get stuck! I needed to replace my worn out driveshafts so I went and bought a new pair. this is what happened next! Passengers side came off without much difficulty. This thread assumes that all of the parts prior to removal have been removed (ie hub nuts etc..) Driverside was a different storey! After removing the capitive bolts from the intermediate housing and also the outer part of the drive shaft (if you need to re-use the drivshaft then dont do that bit!!) so basically nothing else was holding it in, nothing could remove it, hamming the collar next to the bearing with a BFH for hours and anything else was futile. Time to resort to PLAN B. This work centers around the lower engine mount with the engine supported, remove the bolt to the cross member and the bolt through the lower bush. Remove the bolts holding the ally casting to the block. It will now be supported by 2 roll pins. Using a large screw driver or crow bar prise the mount away from the block, and using a junior hacksaw cut the 2 roll pins. The driveshaft can now be removed, along with the mount - which now can be separated. Replace the roll pins before putting the mount back on- they are 8mm in diameter. The drive shaft on my car that caused this headache had only been in since october last! Hope this helps someone out of a hole Cheers Michael
fletch 0 Posted May 10, 2007 One of my small bolts that holds the offside driveshaft into the lower mount was stuck solid and started to round. Had to take the whole mount off with the driveshaft intact and drill it out. They can be a pain in the ass.
Batfink 201 Posted May 10, 2007 i've never not been able to remove the driveshaft from the intermediate bearing housing. Did you definitly have the captive bolts rotated round to allow the bearing/driveshaft to move. I then get a coal chisel on the bearing and the BFH on the other end. I could use releasing fluid but i've never needed to.
funkymofo 0 Posted May 10, 2007 I had to do the same as you! I still cant get it out of the engine mount housing now, luckily I can just use the gti6 lower mount and buy new drifeshafts.

M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted May 10, 2007 (edited) oh joy, sounds like i'm going to have fun. puting a new box in mine over the next week or so as the syncro mesh is starting to go. if you leave that shaft on the box will slip off the engine and the shaft easily enough, just get a mate to wiggle it back in for you upon fitting of the nbew box, i also think it should be said that when your refit the shaft atack the bearing housing with wet n dry and ad copius amouts of copper slip Edited May 10, 2007 by M_R_205
