rallyman 0 Posted May 7, 2007 After rebuilding the front end of my 1.6gti - BE1 box, lots of new shiney bits: drive shafts, arb drop links, tca's and a lower strut brace to name a few items, I have noticed a click coming from the passenger driveshaft. I have not driven the car and it is currently on axle stands. The click is every revolution of the shaft with the engine running and the car in gear. The drive shaft is a new/remoulded one from GSF. The gearbox has a few rattles of its own aswell. Is the clicking noise from the driveshaft or could it be from the diff SO has anyone had a "new" driveshaft from gsf and had woes out of the box? could it be something more sinister like the 'box and if so does anyone have a decent spare for sale if it is? M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted May 7, 2007 when a cv joint is shaged it normaly clicks while accelerating round bends, does it do it with the box out of gear and you spinniung the wheel by hand? if not id point the blame at the box
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted May 7, 2007 outer joints click on lock as said. if its clicking on straight ahead it can sometimes be the inner joint. what make are they? if there gkn there usually the best you can buy.
rallyman 0 Posted May 7, 2007 I used the car last october and it did have a d/s clunking noise, but only on lock, hence the new d/s's. Yes turning the d/s by hand with the steering straightish (no wheels on at mo) will get a a similar result - a clonk in the same place. It is a GKN. I was wondering about jacking the tca up to reduce the angle of the d/s to see if the noise stopped. Cheers Michael
rallyman 0 Posted May 7, 2007 I think it may have clicked out of gear though I would need to check this! Got called in for dinner, so ran outa time!
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted May 7, 2007 ive had a few probs with reconditioned shafts and joints before so dont discount the shaft as being ok. give the inner joint a good wobble up and down and see if theres any play in the diff. if there aint get the shaft changed under warranty. rallyman 0 Posted May 8, 2007 Had a poke and a prod on it tonite, there is is no click on the d/s when it is not going round, when it is turning it disapears when tca is raised and the wheel is turned outwards slightly, oh and I couldnt move anything, so am I correct that the d/s needs returning? rallyman 0 Posted May 9, 2007 Ok, I called GSF who seemed sure that it was the shaft not located correctly. So I said I'd check: After poking around again, the only thing that I could find was the internal shaft is sticking out from the seal by apx 7mm as shown below. Is this the cause of the noise??? Am I correct in saying that there is no locking clip that is on the end of the inner shaft? Have I got to make another trip? Cheers Michael
fletch 0 Posted May 10, 2007 Can you pull it out and reseat it to be sure? Are you 100% theyre the correct shafts? Take it youve got fluid in the box?
