Help - Alternator Problem?!

Recommended Posts

Rob Thomson

Battery light came on the other day. Intermittent at first, but now it's on all the time. I had a spare alternator in the garage that I bought a couple of weeks ago. Fitted that on Friday morning, bearings were obviously f***ed and the light was still on. Went to GSF and a nice shiny new one. Busy all weekend, but just been out and fitted it and the f***ing light's still on!

So, is it something else, or have I got three f***ed alternators?

I can't think for the life of me what else it could be. The battery/starter/alternator cable seems fine. It cranks fine so the earth strap must be ok. I get 12V at the battery and alternator whether the engine's running or not, so it's not the warning system that's f***ed.

Any ideas?!

if it's 12v with the engine running then i would suspect the alternater. try and see what voltage you get across the alternator with the alternator disconnected with the engine running. could it possibly be a broken wire to the light?

the alternator shouldnt be dead then beacuse it would cause all the life out the bat to drain, and then have a flat bat, everytime, the bat light come on when the key is turned but goes off when the engine is running, but yours stays on, sure the right wire is pluged in.

Sussed it, ish.

Hadn't realised that the alternator needs a 12v supply through the warning circuit to get it 'started'. Just connected the 'warning' spade terminal to the battery and now have 14v.

I have two perfectly good alternators, but a wiring problem between the warning light and the alternator. Need to trace that fault and it'll be fine.

My 205 doesnt and I have the same symptoms!

Would you suggest I check Im getting 12v through the spade connector on the alternator, then check it is making a good connection with the alt?

Cheers, Ton
