Weak Idle Problem.

Recommended Posts

Guest Puddlez

Hey everyone,

Another bit of advice needed about my poor little GTi (1.6 Phase 1.5 :D )

Ive sorted most of my problems by changing the throttle body and starter motor so is running much better now and feels a bit quicker but still rather flat but thats something else ill speak about later.

I have a very weak idle. we have ajusted it to idle at about 1700 revs because when putting the lights/heaters etc on the revs drop to almost 1000 revs and anything less then 1000 revs the car will stall. Power steering on full lock also stalls the car 95% of the time. Now with the new throttle body on the revs are much higher on the same setting but we have not yet ajusted it to see what thousand revs its stable at. Any known reason why the idle would be so weak. Maybe a sensor or the idle control valve etc???

The other problem is that since Ive had the car its been very flat through the rev range, as I said feels better now the throttle body is changed but still feels lack luster with no sort of power band like usual. Anyone experience a problem like this on their GTi...

Any help would be much appreicated and thanks in advance

is that supposed to be a boost valve, as in an fse?

don't use one, simple as. unless your engine is heavily modified, theres no need.

first problem sounds like your alternator may be dodgy, try and find out how many volts it put out. jetronic, which is what you have, doesn't hace an icv, instead it has pendulums and counter weights.

search for things like hesitation, misfires, service, flat spots and the like, it will come up with lots of suggestions. after that get the car rr'd and set up.

A friend of mine has suggested it may have something to do with the altenator but we tested the voltage yesteday and it was reading a healthy 14.24v at the battery when charging. battery reads 12.6 when not charging.

Many people including my boyfriend have had boost valves and they have been terrible, just make the car run richer and lumpy :D

I wouldnt call my problem the car being hesitant or having misfires or flat spots just a bit bland compared to hat it should be... much quicker then my 1.8 diesel 205 obviously but my boyfriends 1.4 8v corsa sri with is 82bhp standard can keep up with me flat out and no its not my driving

I'll definitely be changing the plugs and leads when i get the cash as one sparky is a bit oily due to a bolt on the rocker cover not being tight :(

Also just to add, Not searched for his yet but I thought as Im here I might as well mention.. My throttle pedal has sunk lower then my brake pedal. I have had this when I first got the car and the cable had come off the cam and it was twice apart before we got the pedal level with the other pedals but its sunk down again.. would this be because its caught on something or come un clipped or such as we had the inlet manifold n TB off to change the starter motor yesterday.

Thanks for the help I shall keep on searching on the forum for other keywords in hope of finding something similar no luck of yet :(

get the car dyno'd after youv'e serviced it and see if it's down on power. s'pose it could have a 1.9 box on instead of a 1.6 one.

i thought this was how it was supposed to be.

set the ignition timing and mixture up to see if that helps and from what i've heard, as i own a 1.9, you need to rev them lots to make them quick.

Did you check what the alternator is charging at fully loaded? ie with heaters and lights on?

My diesel had the throttle pedal sunk under the brake pedal so didnt think much of it apart from it being dog slow. the box is definitely a 1.6 as its a new one as of 3 months ago.

Throttle bodie has been changed and the idle seems much stronger now but still stalls on full lock due to power steering.. is this normal to every gti with power steering or is this a genuine problem with mine. Not checked the charge with all auxilleries going will have to have a try next time i have access to the multi-meter.

Thanks for all the help you guys! I just want my gorgeous Miami running properly!

Id agree with above, alternator fault. the fact is does it when steering just siuggests a bit of drag from the pump is slowing the eblt down so alternator slows and does it again. multimeters are only a fiver and a very worthwhile fiver in my opinion. Cant have a 205 without one!!

Check that the butterfly is opening completely when pressing the throttle... Maybe the cable has too much play on it and needs to be adjusted on the throttle body fixing. This would definitely explain the lack of power...

No throttle = No power!

Surely a Corsa shouldn't go as fast as a 205... EVER! :)

Hello !

I've had similar problems reacently , for weak idle i've discovered that SAD (choke) wasn't working properly - the gap inside was too small not opened enough for cold start but then it was switching on again when driving a little faster at motorway  because i didn't have 12v heater connector on SAD and on long driving at motorway coolant temp. falls down to 70c so tihs was leading to SAD opening again and very high idle speed until the coolant temp. rises back to around 75-80c and switching SAD off .. very annoying :D

.. as for not pulling properly it can be something about ignition (plugs , leads , dizzy cap - rotor , ignition timming - module ..) or fueling ( blocked filter , dirty injectors , AFM - fuel mixture , TP sensor ...) here is one interesting post about ignition module :

This worked like bloody miracle on my car ! B)

hope this helps B)
