My 205 Failed Its Mot Yesterday.....

Recommended Posts

My 89 1.6 Gti failed on a few areas, two of which I could do with some input please.

The emissions were 5.9% instead of the 3.5% allowed, on a fuel injected car how can this be sorted?

Secondly, the headlights are loose and also need adjusting.

The garage is going to do all the work which will make life easier but my main question is do 205 generally suffer from wobbly headlights and if so what is the cure?

I bought this car on October and have been getting it sorted slowly ever since (head rebuild etc) now I am just very keen to get it on the road and enjoy it!

I am not sure how the headlights are clamped in on 205 but on the Visa they just clip into these 2 clamps, you can then rotate them through about 40 degrees and so mine failed the MOT on this. I drove down there and showed him how when you shut the bonnet, that holds them in place correctly and so it passed. Perhaps this is the same for a 205 and he only tried it with the bonnet open?

Dont know on emissions. When it happened for me a few years back I slipped him £20 heh

Mine had problems with the headlights once.

They are held in by metal clips either side of the headlight. Then on the side where the wing is, there is a 'ball & socket' arrangement. This is used to adjust the headlight up and down. There is a lever with about 3(?) settings and a grub screw.

Just check that the metal clips are around the headlight and that the ball & socket mechanisum has not come off.

Regarding emissions, you want to look for 'idle mixture screw' in the Haynes etc. I can't remember where it is too since going to 16V power.

Take the whole of the inlet system (including AFM) from the manifold off & clean it all inside thoroughly with some carb cleaner (inculding as far into the throttle body as you can reach) & do the breather pipes as well.

You might be surprised how mnuch difference this can make to your emissions.

Headlights are held in place by two clips, one each side & a hook that fixes to the beam adjuster behind it. Maybe the clip isn't fitted as they can be a tight fit.

Super Josh

Also, when was your oil last changed? This will also alter your emissions a little.
