you will need 1.9 hubs and shafts to fit 1.9 calipers discs and pads...

Can't you fit 1.9 calipers but still use 1.6 discs?

Yes just fi the 1.9 Calipers with the 1.6 discs/hubs etc.

Ferodo DS2500's or Mintex M1144's on the pad side of things.

 You'll need the 1.9 Caliper bolts too as they're alot shorter than the 1.6's ones.

Is there much difference between the two calipers?

The 1.6 Bendix ones are generally not a great design in lots of opinions, they get worn and you'll hear a clonk when reversing up then braking, and just generally aren't as effective as the Girling 1.9 ones.

Personally i've not really had a problem with 1.6 ones for road use if kept in good condition, apart from the annoying clonking/movement. The 1.9 ones are noticably better though i must say.

Ahh ive always wondered what that clonking noise was.

Well im off on a hunt for some 1.9 calipers

But the 1.9 calipers weigh a ton in comparison, Pads as said, DS2500's or Mintex 1155's or if budget allow Pagid RS4's

Sounds good. :P Are they better than 1.9 ones? Lighter?

Also will the 306 dturbo rear calipers fit onto a 309 gti beam?

All these parts from different pugs does start to get confusing sometimes! :)

im not sure if they are lighter as i have never compared them tbh, there the same as the 106 gti and they stop like proverbial to a blanket B)

dturbo's run drums, but the xsi's and upwards run discs. im not sure whether they would fit. only way to find out is to try.

i have to admit it does get confusing but its a good way of making a great car better! :D

I wouldn't imagine they're any lighter than 1.9's as the discs are bigger at 266mm and a tad thicker i think too, the calipers are fairly bulky, a similar design to the 1.9's.

All the DT's i've had were/are 266mm, Non turbo's have the same 247mm as 1.9's though, so i'd presume that's what you must have in that case.

there from a 95 dturbo and they are 247mm. i have had two of them and they have both been 247mm. same as 1.9 gti and 106 gti. :(

My last road rally pug was a 1.9gti.

I used standard front callipers, standard discs, greenstuff pads, AP551 brake fluid, and the rear discs and pads were totally standard, goodrich hoses, and a tilton bias valve in the rear line. No hydraulic handbrake either as I never needed one!

Had no problems with brake fade personally, and I can get in the top 10 so I dont hang about either!

Cheers

Paul
