Extra Gauges In Tu

Recommended Posts

I have a spare AX GT engine which I am going to rebuild for my XS. I have also got some GTi clocks to fit, and it would be nice if I could get the oil pressure and oil temperature gauges working. So I was thinking - how and where could I tap the appropriate sensors into the engine? I was going to use GTi sensors as it seems to make sense, to make the sensors read correctly.

Also, has anyone else done this and got experiences they can share?

There's an oil pressure switch on the front of the block that can be removed and the gauge sensor fitted with an adapter.

Again an adapter in place of the sump plug can be used to fit the temp sensor into the sump.

I'm not sure if there is a sump available for the alloy block with the sensor hole is there? So I guess the sump plug is the only way?

The is a sump as we fitted one to my friends XS, think it's off the later block as there were a few holes missing for the studs that bolt it on but we just removed them and it doesn't leak.

Just take the sump of and drill and tap it?

It's not thick enough, but you could use an adapter with a nut on each side.

Or the sump plug!

I'd tap the sump to take an adaptor, then seal the adaptor in with a high temp epoxy on the mating flanges.

You can buy a correctly threaded adpator for about £2.

Sump plug idea sounds cheap and easy, I like! Cheers Sandy

Where from and what's the thread (if you happen to know it)? Thanks!

The sump plug thread is M16x1.5. Demon Tweeks do a good range of them, but they're not the only ones.

Tadaa! That's enthusiastically expensive though?

something like this

Thats for oil temperature though isn't it? Oil pressure would have to be measured from elsewhere, like the pressure switch take off.

yeh! :D was just to illustrate your point.

So I need two of these in M16x1.5, one to replace the sump plug in which I can fit an oil temp sensor, and one to go in the existing oil pressure sensor hole?

I assume a sensor is a sensor with regards to actually filling these adaptors? Doesn't have to be the "right kind" to tally with the GTi gauge or anything?

Run that past me again?

Sorry, reading that back it's not the clearest question ever, is it...

What I meant was, which sensors could I use? I don't know if they are a generic item, or I'd need a GTi one so that it gave the correct reading on the GTi gauges I'll be using.

Sorry to be both unclear and ignorant, makes it very difficult sometimes :(

LoL. Well if you're using a GTi dash, you'd better use GTi sensors. Sensors are vaguely calibrated to the associated gauges and it does vary between applications.

I know that i'm digging up an old thread here but it seemed to make more sense than starting a new one. I'm going to be fitting some new guages to my XT sometime soon and i need to know what thread is the oil pressure switch take off so that i can buy the correct sender. Thanks

are they all not m16 x 1.5?

why dont you try seeing if a known thread size on a different sensor fits into the hole?

at the front of the block behind the manifold. I has the car out today so i had a good look at the switch and it does look quite big so i think you might be right in saying that it's an M16
