Mike Walker 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Just about to set my ignition timing but just wondering if det is something that you'll definately know if you hear it? Concerned that I won't be able to distinguish it from the rattaty tat noise of the engine and things vibrating and creaking all over the car! Also am I right in thinking that you turn the whole dizzy clockwise to advance and anti to retard?
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 4, 2007 directions are right, you should hear if the engine pinks over the normal din, I could hear mine and its stripped out totally and rattles a lot with group N mounts.

Grim.Badger 15 Posted May 4, 2007 Just what I wanted to hear, cheers Mine wouldn't pink on idle; it's best to adjust the timing until the last point at which the revs will rise, after that and you will be making no difference.

Eeeeeeee trying to work out what you mean but can't, do I turn the dizzy until the revs rise no more on idle then adjust the idle screw to suit? Seems a slightly vague way of doing it........... Seems a slightly vague way of doing it........... Yes adjust the dizzy until the revs rise no more, or at least that is how I've done it and the car is still very responsive and doesn't pink. You will need to adjust the idle screw anyway. It is exactly the same as previously mention except you are listening for a different noise, it should be very obvious when you get to the point where turning the dizzy has no effect on the revs. To check if the car is pinking slam it into 5th gear when it should be in 3rd/2nd and try and accelerate, the pinking will be damn obvious with the windows down unless you have a really chavvy bean can as an exhaust. Mike Walker 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Sweet cheers, I do have a different backbox on my exhaust but it's fairly subtle so should be fine.
