reg 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Brought the car with a dodgy handbrake, thought it would just need adjusting. Turns out the left side cable was snapped. Not a bother though, a new one from GSF for under a tenner and a few days later i was ready for action. But i can't remove the old cable!!! Its almost welded where the cable holds onto the hub\caliber. Several hours and cans of Plus Gas there is still no joy. I tired hammering a screwdriver on to it but it just broke the end of it and made it worse. Very frustrating. I'm really after some information so i can figure out what to do next. Does the handbrake fix to the rear hub or the rear break caliper? as it seems i'll have to replace one of them.
Baz 421 Posted May 4, 2007 Hi reg, they can be a bugger and seize, but keep at it, perhaps give it a few doses of the plusgas/Diesel or similar and let it soak in for agood day or so before attempting it again, it should come loose eventually! As for where it fixes i presume you're talking about a 1.9? you haven't said though?
Ahl 4 Posted May 4, 2007 Like Baz says they can be a right pain in the arse, but they will eventually come off if you can get enough square hits at it. It might be an idea to cut off the end on the caliper side and use some sort of drift on it. And a big hammer.
Super Josh 4 Posted May 4, 2007 If this is on a rear caliper, then what I do is to soak it in plus gas or WD40 and then use a 1/2" socket extension as a drift and a big club hammer. You can rest the socket extension against the handbrake cable arm, to give it some support and then hit it squarely against the ferrule and it will eventually drift out. reg 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Yep it's 1.9(rear discs). Ya i'll give it another go. But it does seem like someone got under the car and welded it tight. But at the end of the day it is a peugeot and it is 17years old. I was just wondering if it would be simpler to replace the whole thing.
Baz 421 Posted May 4, 2007 Paience dear boy! Just put some copper grease round the new one when you fit it, and *hopefully* it won't do it again.
