Mot terror today!

co2 levels are at 11.74% @1K rpm- engine v.hot . Is this likely to be adjustable on the afm idle mixture, replacement of afm (can substitute for the gti one for test :( ) Or something more sinister and expensive?

I've searched and one thread (Jim's I think) suggested a figure similar when playing about with spring tension

Good test otherwise, h/lamp aim (with seized adjusters :) ) and corroded brake pipe over fuel tank (only one on rear not replaced with copper

thast extremely high, AFM adjustment will bring it down a bit but you may want to check your ECU temp sensor is working.

I assume you mean CO rather than CO2?

Assuming you mean CO, that's definately running very rich - you might be able to adjust it out using the idle mixture screw on the AFM, but I'd be tempted to chuck a known good ECU and ECU temp sensor on.

The limit for CO is 3.5% but you should really be aiming for more like 1-1.5%

What was the HC (hydrocarbons) figure?

You're right, of course, Anthony, CO

HC level is 359 ppm

I'll change the temp. sensor and tweak the afm for now as the car has to be sold when mot'ed :):P but will take the afm from my 1.9 along to switch if necessary.Got a bucket full of 1.6 afms, no 1.9 spare- isn't that always the way?

The garage is very good to me and will let me test it on their analyzer before re-test, and do odd jobs on it whilst the rest of the test goes on- checking again at the end  Last year I had a test before lunch, borrowed the ramp during lunch-time to fit new handbrake cables,re-tested the brakes after lunch and gave me the mot! Not many of these garages left

Hows your oil looking? Last car i worked on that had that higher Co bore washed. I'd get it sorted ASAP and dont keep an eye on you oil, as i bet its mostly petrol!

when cars run hot it normaly running lean due to under fueling,

but like james has said that could be due to the oil being mostly petrol

It's only run about 40 mins on that oil! stil smells o.kRan hot ,I think, mainly due to the fan not cutting in whilst it idled at testing station for about 15-20 mins. Worked o.k with the old rad that I damaged being ham-fisted so I suspect the sender on the nearly new, humungous t.d rad I fitted-not run upto temp since fitting  (or air-lock)

So swap ecu temp sender+ rad sensor, bleed cooling system and wind out the idle mixture screw ,till idle falters and then in a 1/2 turn (see, I do search :D ) Already advanced the timing! Here's hoping

Swapped the temp sender and afm and changed oil+ filter, just in case- CO now at 1.2% :D

Changed thermoswitch in rad, found the bottom hose from dist.block to metal pipe was weeping by the jubillee clip- sorted that. filled and bled system and now doesn't go above halfway on the guage when idled for 20 mins :D

Brake pipe being done Fri at re-test station and should then have 12 months mot

Thanks, again for the input, everyone
