Bonzai 2 Posted May 3, 2007 (edited) totally random noise which over the course of a couple months has gotten more regular. I managed to catch it happening on idle today which its never done before so i video'd it in the hope someone can shed some light. The video doesnt quite do the sound justice but you can make out its like a grinding noise, and by the way, the car is "idling" at ~1700 rpm because the ICV is defunct http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v223/205...03052007007.flv Edited May 3, 2007 by Bonzai
jackherer 543 Posted May 3, 2007 Does pressing the clutch down make any difference? Could be that he gearbox is coming loose from the engine.
Bonzai 2 Posted May 3, 2007 nope its completely random and sporadic, nothing i do (that ive noticed) makes teh slightest difference to it either making the noise or not. The only seemingly slight clue is that it never seems to happen immediately from cold, only once its upto near enough average temps
Mikey G 3 Posted May 3, 2007 Starter motor dragging? Certainly sounds like its coming from the flywheel. I have noticed your starter was a little noisy last time i saw your car.
Bonzai 2 Posted May 3, 2007 yep starter is very noisy, i'll give you that, and i wont rule it out. However i did think the noise was more prominent from the back of the engine

M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted May 5, 2007 bump for more suggestions pretty please does it do it when your driving, it sounds like my g/f changing gear
Bonzai 2 Posted May 5, 2007 yeah it does it all the blinking time, i just havent been able to do a video whilst driving for obvious safety reasons! Im starting to think it sounds like a big fook off cable arcing and sparking, i hope its not!
M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted May 5, 2007 sounds to mechanical to be electrical, id gues theres something amis inside the gearbox or as said before on the fly wheel, to rule out the gearbox put it in gear and dip the clutch while at a stand still, will stop everything in there spinning, does it increase with speed/revs?? whats it like under accerleration/engine breaking? Pug_101 0 Posted May 6, 2007 Sounds gearbox to me, 1st though was Thrust bearing, quite like the starter motor idea though. Could a spring in the clutch have gone? Cheers
Bonzai 2 Posted May 6, 2007 same noise regardless of acceleration or braking although sometimes it can be stopped temporarily by putting more power down or blipping throttle in neutral. I knew it wasn't electrical issue's, it has a rotational sound to it, if that makes sense suggesting engine or gearbox. The fact it does it on idle remopves possibility of driveshaft, hubs, brakes etc. My only comment towards clutch is that i havent noticed any different pedal action i.e lighter, stiffer, shorter or whatever. Many thanks for replies, given me plenty to think about.
