KaspaCti 0 Posted May 3, 2007 Hi, I'm trying to remove the gearbox on my CTi so that I can change the clutch. I've removed the 3 starter motor bolts the lower bolt and two of the upper box to block bolts, but I'm really struggling to get at the 3rd upper bolt underneath the distributor (nearest to SAD). How do people normally get at this bolt as I've tried umpteen combinations of extensions/ujs on my ratchet to get at it but it's in a really awkward recess with limited room . Can you get at it with a deep offset ring spanner? Many thanks Sean.

Undo this one from under the inner wing whn the gearbox mount is undone, and the engine & box is inclined. couple of extension bars and 'tis quite easy from that position
Alastairh 47 Posted May 3, 2007 In the past i've done it with spanners, normal socket or uj, but a friend did showed me a Uj built in 16mm socket from Snap on, which works a treat! Alastair
jonnie205 1 Posted May 3, 2007 easiest way is a spanner
gti_al 1 Posted May 3, 2007 I think i use a couple of extentions to get that one... when all the wiring is out of the way and you can see it properly it isn't that bad. Is always seems to be in the dark with wires everywhere though...
KaspaCti 0 Posted May 3, 2007 Thanks for all the responses guys. I'll work my way through all the suggestions starting with the spanner until I get the bloomin thing undone. What's more annoying is I was only going to change the driveshaft oil seals, but then I thought while I've got everything off............. p.s. Ashley, you're spot on re swearing and throwing of toys! Cheers Sean
Turbo7379 3 Posted May 4, 2007 I usually crack it with a 16mm ring spanner & then whizz it off the rest of the way using a 3/8 drive short socket , u/j , extn bar & air ratchet .
KaspaCti 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Thanks for all your help guys. I got the bolt out last night using a deep offset ring spanner. Gearbox is now off ready for new clutch to be fitted. Highlight of gearbox removal was watching the box slowly pin my right hand to the garage floor whilst desperately trying to manoeuver it with my left One more quick question, the box is a BE1, should the release bearing have a spring or clip to secure it to the clutch fork? There isn't one on the old bearing although I'm sure that the haynes manual mentions that there should be. There are a couple of holes on the arms of the release bearing which I guess a clip of some sort may go through. If there is supposed to be one, does anyone know where I can get one from? I'm guessing dealer part only? Many thanks Sean
ashley peddle 3 Posted May 4, 2007 the release bearing just clips over the clutch arm... its worth cable tying the clutch arm down so that you dont knock it (moving the bearing) whilst refitting the gearbox (i learnt that the hard way )
