V8Pete 0 Posted May 2, 2007 My clutch is slipping and I want to take the opportunity to fit an Mi16 flywheel so I can use an aftermarket ECU down the track. I assumed I could just buy an Mi16 clutch, but I was in the shop today, and they said Mi16 is pull-type and 205 8v is push-type so it wouldn't work. I'm sure I've heard of people using Mi flywheels on 8 valves. The Mi16 clutch they showed me was a one-piece assembly thing with the cover and clutch already connected somehow. What am I doing wrong? inferno 1 Posted May 2, 2007 ask for a bx16v clutch then! or an early mi16 clutch. dont know the part numper off top of my head but im sure sume1 will. iirc my last clutch was a 215mm from a 306 derv as they didnt list an mi16 one ffs
V8Pete 0 Posted May 3, 2007 early 205's pre '89 iirc are push type, anything later (Reverse next to 4th) is a pull clutch, therefore fine for an Mi16 clutch. Cheers Can anyone confirm this? Do you if the one with the clutch cover and clutch all in one assembly is pull or push? I'm confused now. Can you tell if this is pull or push?
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted May 3, 2007 (edited) I have a late be3 box and its push type, I also bought an MI16 clucth and that too is push type. Only pull types Ive come across are on the turbo diesels. If you want a clutch that will definatley fit a push type gti box then get yourself a 306 2.0 8v clutch for a 1994 model. Exactly same as an mi16 push clutch. that photo is push type, the pull type have the thrust bearing attached to the cover Edited May 3, 2007 by Richie-Van-GTi
jonnie205 1 Posted May 3, 2007 All 205's are push type regardless of age. the early mi16 or bx 16v is the one you want
V8Pete 0 Posted May 3, 2007 Any idea if alloy block and iron block Mi16 flywheels have different clutch cover bolt patterns?
Anthony 1,003 Posted May 3, 2007 early 205's pre '89 iirc are push type, anything later (Reverse next to 4th) is a pull clutch, therefore fine for an Mi16 clutch. That's completely wrong Baz. BE1 and BE3 had a different clutch arm, but both are still push-type clutches. All 205/309 clutches are the push-type regardless of BE1 or BE3, as are 1.9 Mi16 clutches. 2.0 Mi16 clutches are the pull type though, which is where I suspect the confusion lies. As said, asking for a BX 16v clutch normally does the trick, as they were all 1.9's and thus push-type.
V8Pete 0 Posted May 3, 2007 Now that I think about it, he brought out two clutches - the first looked like a push-type and what I was expecting, but he put it on the flywheel, put it back in the box, and got a pull-type. The guy I bought the flywheel off has 2.0 Mi16 engines, that's why I wonder if the clutch cover bolt pattern is different. I'll have to pop in again next week. Thanks for the clarifications. Anthony 1,003 Posted May 3, 2007 1.9 Mi clutch covers fit onto 2.0 flywheels fine - I did one just the other day...

V8Pete 0 Posted May 10, 2007 (edited) Grrr Went back to the clutch shop - they reckon the Mi16 'push' clutch kit won't fit the iron-block flywheel. I think they're starting to get pissed off at me wasting their time asking too many questions. Are the Mi16 and 205 GTI push-type release bearings the same? If not, what's the difference? pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 10, 2007 Are the Mi16 and 205 GTI push-type release bearings the same? Yes, I've got an 8v release bearing on my car with an Mi flywheel & clutch. Works perfect. Graham.
