Throttle Sticking Wide Open

Recommended Posts

kyepan

Hi there,

Have done a quick search on this but not many posts about it so...

When accelerating hard in 2nd and sometimes 3rd, when i lift to change, its not lifting with me and as the clutch is dipped its bouncing off the limiter just for a moment, then the revs fall.

Have changed the throttle cable / sleeve / pedal clip, and also cleaned the throttle butterflies with some petrol and a tooth brush.

have applied a bit of lube ;) to the spring mechanisms on both sides of the throttle body but to no avail.

Its only been doing it for a month, and its intermittent at that, but its something I would rather sort, as over taking someone only to shift and bounce off the limiter makes me sound like a twat, that and if i did need to slow down, full throttle would not be ideal.

I'm pretty certain its a mechanical stickyness, as the pedal remained on the floor momentarily when it happened.

Do i need to:

Take off the throttle body and clean the mechanism thoroughly.

Remove the TPS, clean and regrease?

what else could be the cause?

any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Justin.

Check the actual throttle pedal itself. When I first went out in mine for the maiden voyage the ECU (in the standard position) was in the way of the pedal and when you put your foot flat to the floor it was catching on it and not coming off full throttle.

Worth a check anyway !

good point, i'll check that, as i did mess around behind there to bodge the pedal when the clip broke.

thanks mate.

i second what pacey has put...

quite off putting when your trying to slow down for a slip road off of the motorway. Turned out to be the linkage just touching the ECU on lift off.

Its VERY offputting if it happens when you're accellerating hard in 3rd and the BMW in front decides to back off. Luckily I was able to do the dodgiest overtaking move ever rather than ram the beemer.

That was caused by the pedal sticking in the soundproofing on the bulkhead in a semi stripped pug.

this sounds like a common thread, bits in the cabin fouling the pedal..

Further investigation needed.

Sarty - considering you've been learning unarmed combat all week, i may settle for punching and running when your not looking..

Giving you the opportunity to grab my leg and practice some kind of hybrid-posi-tronic-pressure-point-death-lock.... is not gonna happen ;)

Yup, check around the ecu. I secured mine out of the way of the top of the pedal lever recently and it's all good now

This seems to be getting worse...

Re-adjusted the cable with batfink, and also taken out a section bonnet of sound proofing that might have been fouling. Also moved the rad fan resistor to check it was not catching on the throttle linkage. We've been watching the little adjuster plug on the bulkhead quite alot but thats a red herring, as when the pedal sticks, its on the floor.

Its not willing to stick unless

The bonnet is closed and Your accelerating hard in 3rd or 4th. It will also do it in fifth but only if you've been driving for a while in that gear at 60-70.. when it comes on cam.

It won't unstick at all, until you either shock it with the brakes or manage to knock it out of gear.

It won't work accelerating in 5th from about 30/40, so its inertia based i think.

Ovbiously you can understand me not wanting to run into the back of somone, was just pootling home from the meet down a country lane, when i gave it a gentle squeeze and it didn't come back, my panic braking nearly caused me to swap ends.

Have one of three theories, its either the whole radiator moving back and fouling on the throttle linkage. Or its something inside the throttle that is heat / vibration / inertia dependent. Or the cable sleeve is gradually moving out of its holder through a number of applications, then catching on a harder one.

I'm going to make sure the rad is not capable of moving with some heavy duty cable ties, and then if needs be take off the throttle body and strip it.

Once again, any advice appreciated.

Think it's Fixed.

Loose radiator moving back under hard acceleration and fouling, radiator now secured ( how much of my car is held together with cable ties).. that would also explain why that the water pipe from the top of the rad was jammed in between the inlet plenum and radiator... and since freeing it properly when doing the diff, ive been having this problem.

If thats not sorted the issue out, I will find out shortly.

J
